Love it. I first saw it as a saturday morning cartoon and then it was the first anime I bought. Me and my sister rewatch it every year.

Really great show, shame about it getting cut down from 39 episodes due to budgeting reasons. If only more modern mecha series could have a fraction of it's dignity and understanding of how to pace things, especially when you get blindsided like Kazuki Akane did. Also dat soundtrack:

Anime soundtracks don't really sound like this anymore and probably never will again, but then again when people just demand more Sawano and Kajiura all the time it's no surprise. There was once a time though when that was just kind of what anime soundtracks sounded like though.

I fell asleep during the title sequence and woke up toward the end when they were having a talk about something something "I didn't want to be alone". I was like "This sounds incredible!" but I never got to watch it again because this was the days before torrents and limewire and napster and all that; it was on some late-night premium cable channel.

Heh, yeah. I remember I watched a a good portion of the first episodes on the tv. I was lucky enough to start on episode 1 and the watched the rest in order. But then when I really got into anime I was trying to remember what the name of Escaflowne was but for some odd reason I remembered the name as "Flownase" and delayed me from buying it for the longest time. I was just lucky to find the box set somewhere and whent "holyshit, this is that anime with mechs with swords on the moon" and instantly bought it.

First episode is literally the worst episode of any anime ever but by the time they reach Freid (episode 7 or 8) I was more hooked than I have ever been hooked by anything ever.

Great world, great characters. I find the ending sad, though.

That is correct, although they did do the story and plot advancement the way that they wanted. All that reducing it to 2 cours did was make them fill each episode with more content. Also, the 4 generals of Zaibach were meant to have larger roles, and there was supposed to be some fighting in Asturia towards the end.

It's not so much the pacing but the focus shifting completely after the escape from Zaibach up to episode 23 which is the only episode being truly rushed and by far the weakest of the show.

Man it's weird to think how this was the anime that ushered in Sakamoto Maya as the bright new upcoming seiyuu star, and now she's doing old hag voices.

I think I saw one of the first episodes of Escaflowne years ago on TV but had absolutely no clue what the fuck was going on. There was a lot of rain, it was fairly detailed looking for animation, a guy was fighting a dragon and killed it for a gem or something.

I bought/watched Escaflowne when I was in high school and so far it's the only show I've seen that seems close enough to fit the description of what I saw as a kid.
