Poor Pluto was being sold for a £ less than all the other soldiers. So I bought her and now she guards my manga.

So what's the best current release of the original series? I haven't touched Sailor Moon since it was being passed around on VHS and I never did finish it.

Hard to say...

The best encodes are from Bunny Hat, but those aren't subbed, The best subs are from SMC, but their encodes aren't as good and have a super annoying black line at the top.

For the first season, you can settle for the Koten_Gars recent release. Good encodes, but meh subs when it comes to styling, and that is because their release was focused on the new dub.

What I started working on was syncing/editing SMC subs and muxing them with the Bunny Hat Raws. Have done 3 episodes so far with some free time last week, just one drop in a bucket...

Unfortunately no. They way the subs are, the sync is off by a few 10ths at the beginning of the Bunny Hat video up to a couple seconds by the end of it. So, you have to shift with multiple passes, first shift 1-330, then 50-330, 100-300, then ..., 329-330. It takes about 30-40 minutes per episode. Then, I am also changing some of their subbing decisions (putting honorifics back, changing translations etc). I am also syncing Japanese subs to it to make those changes, which takes some time as well.

Yes, it's the breaks. There's a break for the opening, the title screen, the eye catch, the ending, the next episode preview. Those are where the sync messes up, and that is why the subs are desynced more towards the end, because more breaks have passed.

Now I've heard that Australia recently got a DVD release of the first season with comparable quality to the Italian DVD that Bunnyhat uses, which I assume comes with subs from the company that releases it (Madman Entertainment).

Although that is all I know and even it is mostly speculative. I doubt anyone has ripped that release.

That might be the one that Koten_Gars used for their release on nyaa a few weeks ago. Those rips are good too, but I am not happy with their sub styling (or lack thereof).

However, there is a chance that it would take less time overall to apply SMC's styling to them than it would take to sync SMC's subs to Bunny Hat. I should give it a try this weekend.

If we're talking Moon's transformation music specifically, then no. The dub did that better. On the whole the original has a far wider variety of great music, so otherwise, yes, you are shit.

The biggest problem with the DiC version isn't that it's that much cornier than the Japanese version, it's that so much of it is just so bland and samey that the bulk of it is just a waste of time to watch.

While I can understand someone not being a fan of, say, dubbed auntie Luna, I couldn't understand how anyone could honestly claim that Japanese Luna is a more interesting character. Same with FemZoicite.
