If there's a demand for a manga in the US then a publisher is going to fill that void in the market by first purchasing the distribution rights from the producers. By buying the books you are keeping the distribution company up and running to continue with future projects.

If the BD is really profitable, then the studio may get a small amount of it. But the objective isn't selling BDs though, it's to boost the merchandise / original source.

That's usually true, though high sales help them in other ways.

A studio is more likely to get chosen for an adaptation if they've made hits before. Publishers as well would be more convinced to order more seasons of a show if the studio that animated it boosted the sales of the source material. And that means more work for the studio, which means more money, which means the studio won't be swimming in debt trying to stay afloat, which means it won't end up like Manglobe.
