The difference is that Grimgar doesn't seem to follow the mechanics of an MMO once you're there. You actually have to learn and train and work like you would in the real world to get anywhere.
That's what makes the setting more hardcore.

Ainz woke up as his lvl. 99 character in his own castle with an army of NPCs and with a full knowledge of the mechanics of the game. Everything works pretty much the same like when he was playing the game from home, only he's physically present now.

Welcome to A-1 Pictures shows. Shitty characters, shitty execution of premises that in the hands of other studios would probably not be an issue, fanservice, melodrama out the ass, shitty pacing, hype marketing, insert songs, decent production values and missing the point of what they occasionally do manage to get thematically right once in a while. Despite all this people will claim their shows are amazing and revolutionary even and that the production values just blow everyone else out of the water.

It's like they're just completely incapable of identifying themes and ideas in whatever they work with too and just try to turn everything into some sort of overwrought melodrama or bland seasonal flavor experience. Toho probably should have just founded their own studio rather than trying to work with A-1, it'd probably be much less of a slog of a show, they might have even ended up with something quirky and decent like Bahamut.

I love how apparently a genre being so one note in it's execution on average and just over-saturated in general means if someone takes even a moderately different approach (or opposite extreme approach) that just means a stroke of brilliance on their part apparently. I don't like it at all. The show specifically puts focuses on people who are incompetent, immoral, and irrational, unlike, say Kirito from SAO. They're all losers in this show. No one wants to identify with a loser, especially other losers.

People should watch characters who are admired for their talent, skills and morality. Those are traits the common loser never possesses. I would rather watch a Mary Sue than some Beta who still somehow manages to be treated with respect he never earned.

There needs to be a characters like Kirito or Touma that can just easily solve all the plot's problems and beat all the enemies down. It's not fun watching these characters struggle all the time, lose, and be out planned by the enemies. It shows how pathetic the main cast is, and how uninteresting it is that there isn't an Ace among them.

Even if you lost your memories, there is still some idea of who you were before you entered Grimgar. Manato felt like he should drink at the bar because he was convinced he did that in his previous life by whatever latent memories he did have.

Renji gathered the strongest people to form his group. How he determined that, who the fuck knows, but basically the main cast are the runts of the litter. They also had Manato wiping their asses for them for a long time too, so they're especially weak.

So it's the setting and the characters. You have a predisposition based on your life from before the game. The main cast simply do not possess whatever strength Renji saw in other members.

One thing I don't like about Grimgar is how narration practically starts off with Renji's grou already buying their badges. It begs the question as to how big the time gap is from them entering to the main cast's encounter with the goblins, and what the main cast was doing in that time gap.
