This pairing does have the advantage that it's easier to understand why Mai fell for the guy. Taro had been kind, protective and supportive towards her. They're both good people and honestly care for one another.

Don't forget Trinity's obession with Kazuma is what caused Nine's death and drove Kazuma even more to accepting Terumi and becoming one with him. I think it's because none of the edgy stuff is his fault. His dumb name comes from a closed loop time paradox so it has no origin, as well as his red and black color scheme because it's plain clothing with a red time paradox jacket, and his stupid edgy activation phrase is Terumi/Relius' idea.

They retconned a lot of stuff from Calamity Trigger era. Calamity Trigger was like the "first season" of a long-running sitcom where they're experimenting with stuff and trying to figure out all the finer details. And then in later seasons, the characters behave completely differently from the first, they don't acknowledge most of the shit that happened in it, and only the bare minimum most important details are ever remembered.

At least Calamity Trigger Reconstruction was a thing so there's now a canon version of events for that game. Which Alter Memory pretty much followed as well.

My favorite retcon is the recontextualization of Rachel's actions as having a crush on Ragna. That was hilarious.
