The entire city was simply a retelling of historical events reusing clones and robots in a grand stage. The city never changes except it always did and it was always returned to the first day of the retelling to tell it again.

Memories were dangerous because if anyone had them, it would change the story and break the cycle. However, Robert started to get memories, which fucked up the last retelling of the story.

But holy shit, was that one hell of a show.
