They did not chose them. The 666th is basically a veteran squadron who got their status as being the meanest motherfuckers at the front by surviving countless operations behind enemy lines. You do not simply replace a pilot because he has PTSD, since his experience and skills are much needed and no greenhorn can replace him for a critical op like a Laserjagd, which is the prequisite for artillery bombardment to successfully defend the lines.

That pilot gets some drugs and phych treatment, and is cleared to go. That's actually how they do in REAL war as well - not in those long-running meme-wars like Afghanistan or Iraq nowadays.

Patton back then punched a shell-shocked soldier for being a PTSD pussy and told him to get back into the fight when he has clearly lost no limb. This is basically the pychological setting of the whole MLA-verse.
