Consider Phlebas and pretty much any other Iain M Banks sci fi novel would pretty much only be doable in the form of animation.

If they did A Fire Upon the Deep, they'd have to change Pham to a Japanese, or at least Chinese.

Japanese were able to accept Yang Wenli, but the Vietnamese prince of a planet named Canberra might be a stretch for them
