If not, I'm probably not that useful in combat, although if it's actually like a real medieval world I'll probably be bigger and stronger than most people. I'd be better off using knowledge to make myself rich though, I have a background in metal fabrication and my knowledge of modern alloys, casting, and forging techniques would probably allow me to make substantial improvements to weapon and armor technology.

The real problem for those of us who want to go the technology route is that the world probably lacks the manufacturing techniques and equipment to make any of it, so you'd have to do that first.

I think my first step would be to build a simple lathe, probably water wheel powered. That provides a good starting point for building equipment and other tools, and makes it possible to construct things like cylinders and pistons for simple steam or combustion engines.

I think the next stop would be a rudimentary electric generator and motor setup, which would allow for powering machine tools and also for basic arc welding, which would be important for things like steam engines because there's no mass production system in place to make things like the thousands of rivets necessary without welding. You can also use the electric arc for melting and alloying metals that wouldn't be doable in a normal forge.

The big thing, though, is that once you have a lathe, you can use it to build a mill and mill tooling.

Once you have proper alloys, a lathe, and a mill, you can make guns. Not just single-shot flintlock muzzleloaders, but real modern guns. They build AKs with simpler setups in Central Asia and Africa. A bolt-action gun probably makes more sense than a semiauto because it's more tolerant of primitive gunpowder blends and inconsistent ammo loads, though.

Ammo is, of course, the hard part, and you'll have to figure out how to mass-produce metallic cartridges, but once you've got lathes up and running it should be possible to make dies and presses for them.

The only ones I know off the top of my head were scribes and the like, and from what I've heard they were generally treated decently.

A merchant, for example, might have a slave who basically acted as an accountant, and while they generally would have been on a lower level than the family, that slave would at least have decent quarters and food, probably more like a paid servant than what you expect for a slave.

As far as I'm aware, a slave like that would be more likely to be a former citizen who'd been put into slavery because of debts or some kind of crime or whatever, rather than some peasant captured in a war or whatever.

That's perfectly valid-sounding comic book logic, but it's not quite that simple in practice.

First, to have training against being disarmed, the trainer would somehow have to have knowledge on all the possible disarming techniques and situations out there, as well as the ways to counter them, which is unreasonable. Not every army has beard guys from Kill Bill to train them. That's why, people generally don't get trained for specific events like that, in the past or the present.

Secondly, disarming techniques wouldn't be effective to begin with if they could be intuitively guarded against. I've trained a marial art involving some, and basically, the moment you get into a position where the disarming technique can be carried out, there's nothing you can do against it, even if you know what's happening and how. Because it's just basic mechanics, force is applied in a way that human anatomy makes impossible to resist. And I practiced the nice art. There are schools out there that aim to first break your arm and then remove the weapon it's holding.

Endlessly grind weak mobs until I'm barely decent in fighting. Soon after, through some unreasonable event of misfortune, I will accidentally sell my soul to whatever malevolent being which exists in said world. Utilizing this hellish bargain, I will then subject myself to horrors unknown until my very being has transformed into that of a seemingly harmless chest.
