Mononoke's whole soundtrack is majestic, probably Hisaishi's best work with Spirited Away.

I have a soft spot for Susumu Hirasawa too, though I admit I only really know him for his Berserk work.
>>
>>135672268
Her original stuff actually is great, though. I'm not sure why she plagiarizes so much when she's clearly a capable composer in her own right.
>>
>ITT: people post their favorite composers based on the shows they watched as opposed to the quality of the music itself

Hisaishi is pretty fantastic though.
>>
>>135672351
It's not anime, but I think that Hirasawa peaked in the late 70s/early 80s when he was fronting P-Model, particularly on In a Model Room and Perspective. He was a far better composer then, and I might argue that he was a better performer, too. His switch to new-age pseudo-ethnic music for his solo career was a bad idea, even if there are a few highlights scattered here and there.
>>
although not anime Keiichi Okabe's Nier OST is still one of the best soundtracks i've ever heard

Susumu is really lucky in that every anime project he's been involved with has directors who REALLY know how to use his music. Satoshi Kon really was a genius.

The Pillows aren't that amazing either but how their songs were used in FLCL was nothing short of majestic.

I don't know, Iwasaki's endless genre mixing has yielded some fantastic results. My problem, as I mentioned before, is that it's usually always too good for the show he's working on. Like Mahouka.

I do wish he had more time with an orchestra, but that seems to be his preference not to use it often. IIRC, he said that using normal orchestral space opera music for Gurren Lagann was "below him", and the success of that led him to develop the modern style he uses nowadays.

Let's be honest here, most modern anime is pretty terrible. It's not just Iwasaki's problem.
>>
Yoshihiro Kanno
>>
>>135675339
High-profile shows is what I mean. Stuff like KLK, AoT, OPM, Reconguista, Space Dandy, etc. Iwasaki's last high-profile work was Gurren Lagann almost 10 years ago. Everything else was forgotten seasonal stuff.
>>
>>135672051
But his best work is the OST for Xenoblade X
>>
>>135675577
Akame was pretty high-profile and Iwasaki got to work on that, and that was just a couple years ago. The new Bones show with Igarashi and Enokido is also pretty high-profile too. All these "high-profile" shows that you're thinking of are usually Aniplex's stuff, to which they want to shill only Kajiura or Sawano. Iwasaki is too smart for them to do that, because unlike those other two, he doesn't like repeating the same shit over and over again.

Tanaka's an old man who's barely relevant anymore, Hyouka was just a side-job to feed himself before getting back to One Piece. Even then, Hyouka's soundtrack was mostly rearranged well-known classical pieces (like what you posted). In fact, most Kyoani shows are musically really boring. You would never hear something like this from a single Kyoani show:

>>
>>135678475
Damn right. They have to keep John Williams away from anime so guys like Joe can stand a chance.
>>
>>135678323
>Military choirs

The fuck?

Other than that, the only thing he's used on there that's somewhat new is dubstep. Everything else you mentioned on that list, Iwasaki has used since nearly the beginning of his career. Even with that, all his soundtracks still manage to sound unique.
>>
>>135678543
Yeah, I don't think Hisaishi would stand a chance against the GENIUS of John's friends like Zimmer.
>>
>>135678565
The melodies are of course different but they "all sound the same" because he uses the same instruments most of the time. A bit like Sawano, Kaijura and Sagisu. Doesn't mean it's a bad thing though, I really like Gatchaman's OST.
>>
>>135678565
>>135678323
The thing I've noticed about Iwasaki is that he's been using an orchestra less and less. The last time he really put a lot of effort into making an orchestral soundtrack was Katanagatari. Now almost all the stuff he does is electronica.
>>
>>135674679
Escaflowne had god tier soundtrack, good taste anon.
>>
>>135675577
Is Jojo somehow not high profile or something? Adaptation of what's literally one of the most popular manga of all time in japan?
>>
>>135678676
So you're telling me that Soul Eater and Katangatari sound the same? Because they both use literally the same instruments spread across different songs. If you're talking about individual songs, I would agree, but the whole package is always different. Jojo had a rock-and-roll motif, Gatachaman had an electronic 8-bit motif, Noragami was a combination of electronic and very old traditional Japanese music. All of these were designed to thematically fit their shows. Honestly, I can't tell the thematic difference between something like Guilty Crown and Attack on Titan, because Sawano made them sound literally the same thematically.

>>135678697
He used orchestral music quite a bit in both Magic Kaito and AgK, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.
>>
>>135678607
This. I mean, Joe Hisaishi? Literally who? Yoko Kanno won''t even consider plagiarizing his work lmao
>>
>>135672051
>I CAN'T HEAR YOU, I CAN'T SEE YOU

It's okay I guess but they lack emotion and are just horrible engrish and gelman. Sure you get used to them but not once have you heard a prominent track for the first time and thought it was good. Not once. Unless if you have trashy taste.
>>
Kenji Kawai of course.
>>
>>135678953
>Jojo had a rock-and-roll motif
>Gatachaman had an electronic 8-bit motif
What? I don't disagree with you, but what the fuck?
>>
>>135678953
> Honestly, I can't tell the thematic difference between something like Guilty Crown and Attack on Titan, because Sawano made them sound literally the same thematically.
Guilty crown has a more futuristic theme with a lot more electronic sounds and heavy sounding cords and the choirs are very military-like while AoT rely more on strings and chaotic choirs. The melodies are also softer for the calm tracks compared to GC.

The the insert songs are what make them so similar plus the sound directors looking for them and the sawano drops to the point of forgetting the rest of the OST. That's a shame.
>>
>>135679299
You can hear it in the soundtrack. There's like one rock song used in the GC soundtrack while there are around five or more in Jojo's, and there's no 8-bit electonica used anywhere in Jojo's soundtrack but is used prominently throughout GC's soundtrack.
>>
>>135679337
They both have the same style of military music (which has been the same in almost every Sawano soundtrack barring Unicorn and maybe KLK), but the GC soundtrack has a few more vocal pop song inserts. If you compare GC to the soundtrack for Xenoblade or A/Z, then you'll be even more hard-pressed to find any differences.

Sawano's pop songs are some of the most horrific things ever composed.
>>
>>135679628
>Sawano's pop songs are some of the most horrific things ever composed.

I think they were great in Ao no Exorcist, almost Yoko Kanno level, but yeah everything since from him has been absolutely inferior.
>>
>>135679628
>They both have the same style of military music
hardly

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tMhkQ520Sk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc3NswQvgkQ

They both have choirs and are representative of their respective OST yet sound quite different.

>Sawano's pop songs are some of the most horrific things ever composed.
Question of taste at this point. I love some of them and am not fond of others.
>>
>>135671956
Keiichi Okabe and Oshima Michiru are unmatched.
>>

He really is the best actually, his musical scores are incredible and I can't think of anything else that comes close to being as great as his stuff, even what Yuki Kajiura or Kawai Kenji compose isn't as great.

>>
Also it's disappointing that not a single person has mentions Takeshi Senoo. I loved his soundtracks for Aria, Inari Kon Kon and even his own album Retro Modern Dandy.
>>
>>135679414
Nothing about Gatchaman's soundtrack is anything near 8bit dude. It's just electronica. You mean electronica, so just say electronica.

Furthermore, I can only think of one rock song in jojo, and it's nothing like the kind of music one would think of when saying "rock & roll" ie something more akin to classic rock. It absolutely does not have a rock & roll theme.
>>
>>135679905
Uh, they sound the same to me, so I don't know what to tell you. Not only the choir, but the shrieking horns to show that "ooOOhh so SCARRYY" shit is going to happen, as well as the usual light electronic background noises that Sawano always abuses the shit out of ever since GC.

>>135679934
Try looking at people like Masimichi Amano, Michiru Ooshima, Toshihiko Sahashi, etc. Kawaii and Kajiura aren't even real orchestral composers like Hisaishi.
>>
>>135679919
Oshima Michiru is pretty close to Joe (who is still the best) in style as well as quality.
>>
>>135680195
>Michiru Ooshima

Ah yeah, SnW OST forgot about him despite that being one of my favourite OST's.
>>
I get why some people find Sawano's works repetitive but damn Nanatsu no Taizai's OST was almost Unicorn Tier in term of quality. Easily the best OST of 2014.

You may be right about it being more akin to classic rock though, but regardless, there are practically no songs in Gatchaman's soundtrack that are anything like this, other than sharing some electronic elements.

>Nothing about Gatchaman's soundtrack is anything near 8bit dude. It's just electronica. You mean electronica, so just say electronica.

Electronica is extremely vague and has been used in practically every single Iwasaki soundtrack to date. GC uses electronica in a way that mimics how it's used in early videogames, especially with its light pings and beeps.

Regardless of whatever you categorize it as, my point is that these two soundtracks are completely different from one another as a thematic whole.
>>
>>135680252
Ooshima's orchestral style is way different than Hisaishi's, hers are much more grand and John Williams-like while Hisaishi's are smaller in scale but more intimate yet still evoke a sense of wonder. I think the people who are closest to Hisaishi's orchestral style are Hirano and old Iwasaki, because they both produce music that feels very intimate and personal, though they both lean more towards melancholy as opposed to wonder.
>>
>>135680385
I was pretty disappointed in it honestly.

>>135680467
>>135680547
Yeah, you're right, they are very different. I'm just arguing semantics here. Aside from the 2nd example, none of those jojo tracks are rock. They're more like 80s synth pop. But this is coming from someone who absolutely dispises trying to place genre in music.

In a way he kind of is. He's been typecast as the guy who does weird music mixing with emphasis on electronica. Because half the stuff Iwasaki churns out these days is just forgettable stuff that any guy with a computer can make. If Iwasaki really wants to mix things up, he should try doing a full orchestral soundtrack again like Kenshin and Agito.
