You could tell this show changed its mind so many times throughout production and had no idea where it was headed.

There was all this heavy foreshadowing about Twelve being some kind of manipulative psychopath who was going to toy with Lisa's feelings. Lisa would get roped into the whole affair and go along with it because she thought Twelve loved her. Eventually she would realize that she was just being used and would lash out at them, becoming a monkey wrench in their plans, putting herself in a great deal of danger while raising the tension. There would be a final scene where Twelve tried to convince her that his feelings really were genuine and she'd have to resist him one last time and stand up for herself.

I'm 90% certain that was the original concept that was being set up. Everything was pointing in that direction.

Instead Twelve turned into a bland everybishie, Five aka Girl L joined the fray, and everything got retarded. Lack of focus and poor planning.

It's actually a great story in the novels, but the anime devoted far, far too much time to a whodunit segment at the start.
What should have been covered in two episodes, took over eight. For the secondaries watching, that became what the whole story was about.
