Guys, should I read Rewrite in preparation for this? I wanted to give it a chance before, but after the upteenth SOL scene (I think they were searching for tsuchinokos), I just thought "Where the fuck is this story even going?" Does the plot pace pick up?

Most Likely option is that Romeo will revise all his routes (common, Kotori, Akane, Moon and Terra) to make them little shorter for anime, and Kai will wrote his own completely new scenario that just reuse some ideas from other routes (Chihaya, Shizuru and Lucia)

A lot of anime-original content solely for the purpose of shortening the routes into 1 or 2 episodes. Sometimes it went completely against the VN, particularly Sakaki's which was a disaster worse than the VN.

I want R07 to die.

Kotori and Akane were good routes but the romance was pretty lacking in both. It still felt like Kotori (I think she was best girl) was dodging MC pretty much the whole novel. Then in Akane route they didn't even bother they just were a couple all of a sudden. Although Akane had the best Tennouji.

In contrast I liked the romances in Chizuru and Lucia even though the overall plot was god awful.

Also it was kind of disappointing how they just tossed the main cast after they reunite in Moon. Kind of a waste of build up when almost all the ends of heroine route when considering other povs were pretty horrendous

So, if Kagari's simulations cover a wide variety of potential realities, does that mean that the what happens in the anime theoretically already happened in the VN? Could all Key works take place in Rewrite?

Most of 8bit works are 1 cour, but they often do 2nd season for their works. So we can expect that they will do same for Rewrite as well. However they are capable to make even 2 cour shows (Tokyo Ravens, Yama no Susume: Second Season), but not so often.
So simply speaking we will get minimally 24 episodes and maximally 36 episodes.

Grisaia was only one cour though and the VN is about as long as Rewrite's so I can see why some people would be worried that it might suffer the same treatment Grisaia received.

I believe that Visual Art's have more money than Front Wing to convince 8bit for all effort to make at least one of seasons 2 cour. Also Grisaia had series of novels that needed to be adapted, Rewrite is just one big novel. And another thing is that for Grisaia's anime script they used just writers that made side scenarios in original novel. While for Rewrite they hired directly Romeo himself. Not mention that director personally supervises script this time. Something that he don't did for Grisaia. Not mention that he already directed original opening from novel:

It was stated that Harmonia is basically spiritual successor of Planetatian which itself wasn't really long. Also presented synopsis sounds really simple and there is just few confirmed characters.
Both Umineko and Higurashi had little bigger cast and more complex synopsis than Harmonia.
Of course I don't say that it can't happen to be long in the end. But there isn't many points towards that possibility right now.

Point is that Romeo is in charge of anime scenario. So any route that wasn't written by him is very threatened if anime will be short.
Your only hope in that case Your only hope in that case is that Kai who was obviously hired to potentially write completely new mashup route will base it mostly on Shizuru route. Unfortunately personally I think that Chihaya and Lucia routes have more chances for that.
