Older shounenshit relied on hyperviolence and gore to portray the grimness.

Modern anime are more subtle about the grim aspect but if you pay attention, its there. The bullying, the authoritarian policing, the suicide, the mental asyllum, etc. It will hit more home if you have processed those types of information before.

Honestly, the only thing that has improved over the years in anime is character bodies.
Not even character designs due to terrible outfit design/animation.
