I am also archiving. The problem is often raws for things that have gone unsubbed. Even some recent kids shows or rebroadcast just do not have full raws available in consistent quality. E.g. Gaist Crusher, and Kasumin. I think those Kasumin rebroadcasts are lost forever (past the first season) since Naisho died.

Yeah but moving images is the core of the medium (the cinematographic medium, I mean, not just anime). Everything else (sounds, dialogue) was added on top of that.

It doesn't "dictate" but there are things that work better than others, always with the goal of making your work as gripping as possible in mind. Think about it. In a visual medium, watching someone die will always have more impact than being told about it (provided you didn't fuck up your scene somehow). Of course, that's an extreme example, but it helps to illustrate where this "show don't tell" thing (and other similar concepts) comes from.

No you've still got this wrong. You avoid datadumping, and just because the method is visual rather than via shitty dialog doesn't mean it gets a pass. Shitty exposition is shitty exposition, regardless of what's being used. As you can have hackneyed dialog bludgeoned in to lazily get things not moving so can you have hackneyed eye rolling inducing shots to bludgeon exposition in.
The challenge is to appear natural.
Most in medias res works simply shift the bad exposition later in the first act or at the beginning of the second. The hope is that they've got you invested using the established action/drama/whatever. It's usually just bait.
