Hey, first post. How about that. Well sorry to start it with a question, but I've got a question.

>ヤバイよー。これ マジヤバイよー。こなきゃとかた……

It's pretty clear that she's not liking the present situation and is thinking it'd have been better if they hadn't come. Isn't こなきゃ こなければ? As far as I know, なければ is "must", so it looks like she's saying it's good that they came? I'm messing up here somewhere, can someone help me understand this?

Someone verify my translation. I dont think i have it correct.

もちろん、キノコやニンジン、キャベツを入れてもOK。炊飯器の加熱力は強力だから、早炊きモードなどにしない限り、しっかり野菜に火が通るだけではなく、やわらかくなるまで煮込んでくれるのだ。

Of course, mushrooms carrots, cabbage etc can also be put in. The rice cooker heating level should be "high" so set the rice cooker must be set to high and only high. Firm vegetables can't just be passed through the fire (??? they cant just be briefly cooked i guess??), they should be boiled alongside until they are tender.
>>
>>135454831
Of course, mushrooms carrots, cabbage etc can also be put in. The rice cooker's heating is strong, but as long as you don't set it to fast-heat mode or something like that, then your vegetables won't just be cooked, they'll also become soft.
>>
>>

Actually, it seems like it says, "as long as you DO set it to fast heat mode". My mistake.

I said once I finished I would make a Flyable Heart chart, so in the future people have an easier way to judge progress. I thought using the sex scenes as checkpoints was the best way to do it without spoilers.

Everything is to scale and as accurate as I could make it. I used the skip function and a stopwatch to measure how long each section is. Then I spent 2 hours in paint making it.

I hope people find it helpful.

I just finished up the introductory course, as recommended by this sub's wiki, on NihongoMaster.com, which just teaches you to read(/write/pronounce) Hiragana and Katakana, as well as a handful of introductory grammar courses.

Moving on to the beginner course requires premium membership, which is pretty costly for something like that in my opinion.

Can any of you recommend what would be the best next step at this point? Is one of the other online resources typically recommended after this, and if so, does it have a similar style of teaching? I don't mind if there is a one-time fee, but I don't care for monthly sub's. Something that would perhaps build off of what their course taught so far would be incredible.

Or would I just be better off going to a community college and continue there?

Thanks in advance.

I'm studying kanji with the Heisig method, and I'm almost done. After that I wanted to start using this knowledge, for example by reading stuff for children.

However I noticed that children manga/books are written in hiragana instead of kanji because they can't read them yet. However for me this is actually way more difficult, because reading hiragana imply the knowledge of the words, the phonetic and so on, while kanji could be probably read even without knowing how to pronounce a word... Do you know of any good resources to practice them? Possibly something "funny", I'd like to avoid scholastic stuff as much as i can...In the meanwhile I'll continue to studying grammar and oral japanese to be able to understand the meaning behind hiragana, but for now I'd really like something to practice kanji

RTK is for learning how do deal with Kanji. It does not teach you japanese. The Kanji knowledge you have now will speed up learning japanese a lot, but you have to start actually learning japanese first.

Either use Genki or read Tae Kim's guide while grinding vocab.

I know "just read" is the current meme, but you're not at the point where you can start reading things. Go learn some grammar and vocab, no matter how boring you think it is.

>I'm doing 60 new cards today to make up for not doing my 30 new cards yesterday

That's not how learning works

>>135459094
There's really not. You've kind of been memed on, learning to recognize Kanji is largely worthless if you don't know the words the Kanji composes, and heisig doesn't teach readings so that doesn't help you much.

What heisig teaches you is "this Kanji *usually* means this vague sort of concept in compounds", and not " X Kanji means Y" which isn't how Japanese works.

It's not that your time is totally wasted, because you'll remember words more easily when you can guess at the meaning before knowing it, but you've done the equivalent of learning Latin roots and expecting to be able to read English.

I would recommend starting core2k/5k/6k/whatever, you'll learn words in hiragana and words in Kanji at the same time, which is what you want right now.

Otherwise you sound like you haven't learned grammar yet, which is the other component needed for reading, and there's resources for that in the guide.

I'd say it's a bit harder than your average eroge (especially when the writing turns purple as it does from time to time) but it's not too bad overall.

Lack of voice acting means you can't rely on it for dialogue, but that's the easiest part of the text to read anyway.

I feel like spoon feeding so I'll just go ahead.

Tae Kim for katakana/hiragana. If you want to try hard write them down on paper, if not just real kana it. Then, Tae Kim for grammar but only the first chapters to get the most important parts down. Tae Kim wants to teach you some vocabulary so make some effort to learn whatever words he wants you to learn. You can use Anki for this purpose. Download anki, make a new deck, add whatever words you come accross in the guide. Then, start reading. Start with manga, shit's pretty easy. You can try like Yotsuba or whatever but something like Yuru Yuri is also very accessible and easy to read I think.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS READING. I can't stress this enough. The faster you get to the reading part, the better. WHich is why you only want the very basics of grammar and Tae Kim is good for this because his chapters are fairly short.
>>

No, that probably works as intended. You reviewed the cards at least once so they were no longer "new", but review cards. Then you suspended them and reviewed them again, probably around 3 weeks later. Since you pressed good, Anki goes "he knew still knew the card after 3 weeks, so the next interval is 2 months".

If you actually still knew the card, great, you just got a mature card without any of the early reviews....if you didn't, why did you answer "Good"?

Anki is REALLY important to successfully learning Japanese, you can only succeed without it if you read/watch a metric fuck ton, but the kind of people who can't motivate themselves to do 30m-60m of anki a day sure as fuck aren't going to be able to motivate themselves to read hard Japanese for several hours a day.

The only time I think it's ok to drop anki is when you can follow anime and read novels without much trouble. Before that and you're risking a lot for little reward.

Also, Anki's most important function in my opinion is grinding kanji (both recognition and their function in words) into your memory, if you drop anki before you have kanji down you're going to have a bad time no doubt. Even Finnie who is fluent from infinite anime works struggles with kanji. So, anki is really important. That's why he should do it even if he doesn't want to.

>>
>>135469975
DJT has a skewed perspective of what intermediate really is.
N5 - A1 - Breakthrough or beginner
N4 - A2 - Way stage or elementary
N3 - B1 - Threshold or intermediate
N2 - B2 - Vantage or upper intermediate
N1 - C1 - Effective operational proficiency or advanced

I think intermediate to begin with is kind of a meaningless word. What is an intermediate? I think among most people it just conjures up an image of someone in the "middle" - better than a beginner, worse than a master". With that in mind, delineating the JLPT levels like that doesn't accomplish much.
>>135470287
Your ranking is just garbage. N5 tests basic grammar, so you need to know something. N4 tests kanji, so you need to know more than just kana. N3 isn't excessively difficult or anything but it's way harder than "good morning". And the real shitfest is N2/N1, "shitty" LNs are no harder than "good" LNs to read, they're both Japanese. If you can pass N1, you can read anything, even harder VNs at a very proficient level. The straight up language difficulty of harder stuff is exaggerated and this is coming from someone who's read Muramasa and LOGH. It mostly just comes down to obscure vocabulary which isn't a very good measure of actual difficulty.

It's possible to achieve a level where you can read most LNs and VNs, even the hard ones, and still have a hard time with news. In fact, a lot of people here will likely reach this state at some point. It's just a matter of what sort of vocabulary and language you're used to at this point, one is not particularly harder than the other.

Man, so much redundancy is pointless no matter how you look at it. You won't really learn most words until you see them in context a few times. Use some of the time you're currently spending grinding anki to read more.
>>
>>135472218

>>
>>135471830
I posted this a couple days ago, so I'll just copy and paste it.

Pros:
>Cute voice
>More interesting sentences than Core2k6k
Cons:
>Sentences only
>Lots of mistakes/inconsistencies
>Decent number of "useless" words like 競馬
>Lots of city names

I went with Core5k because I was sick of Core2k6k, because I tried it several times before and kept quitting. I didn't want to look at the same words/sentences again and hear the same audio again. And I really liked the voice. It wasn't professionally done though, so sometimes you can hear the TV in the background, and in 1 card you can hear an ambulance.

The absolute biggest problem is that the vocab word cannot be separated. There is one field that has both the vocab word and its definition. So you usually have to read the entire sentence for every card, which makes reps take forever.
>>
>>135473538
> random numbers and percentages
No, you're doing 5 cards per 1 note, instead of 1 card per 1 note, ergo 5x inefficient, ergo 500%.
Anon, it's really simple. It's not a "superb method" or anything. You're just doing way more cards in anki than you need to be. It's that simple. It's not about time due to college, it's not about any of that. It's just you doing more work than you need to do to learn what you're learning.

You did OK, and you could of done better, and in the future you could be doing better if you change. But you won't. So, my condolences for all the time you are going to waste.
>>
>>135473486

>>It is precisely 500% ineffective
>No it isn't.

Not him. I'll agree it isn't 500% ineffective because seeing words in different contexts does confer tangible benefits. However, I don't see how spending so much more time on Anki is worth these benefits since you would have eventually gotten them through reading anyway. If he wanted to do a sentence deck, it should have been a hell of a lot more optimized so he wasn't spending so much time on the same words.

While the other guy is definitely being immature I haven't seen you give a decent response to him either.

>>
To help the inefficient anon, and to go off >>135473917's post:

I know firsthand what it is like to realize your study method is inefficient, and that it is at first hard to accept. I am an RTKfag, but rather than argue the benefits of RTK, I just want to talk about the study methods I used for RTK and how they were inefficient since it relates to this anon's study methods right now.

In addition to writing down the keyword and kanji for RTK, I would write down the entire "story," in English, along with those two items. This took a long time but I felt convinced that this was the "right" way to do things. I posted what I did on DJT and someone called me a retard, I got defensive, etc. But then I decided to try not writing down the story and just using my imaginative memory. At first I didn't like it; it felt like a weird and alien process. But then I realized I was going through the book twice as fast with similar retention rates. I felt a load off my shoulders since I could now move at twice the speed, but I also felt dumb for my wasted time up to that point.

I guess my point is: study methods can absolutely be inefficient. Just because something is "working" does not mean it could not be working BETTER. If someone tells you you are spending more time than you should on something, they may be wrong, of course. However, they may be right. Try other people's advice, see if it works for you. If it doesn't, oh well, if it does, then hey, you are now making much faster progress.
>>

A kimono wearing otaku social studies professor and hikikomori was teaching a class on Asian History.

"Before the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Emperor Akihito and accept that that the Japanese are the most highly-evolved human beings that the world has ever known."

At this moment, a sagacious, filial, scholar-gentleman who has scored ahead of 150,000 students in the Civil Service Exams and understood the full extent of the barbarity of those living outside Zhongguo held up a copy of the Nihon Shoki.

"What are the characters written upon the pages of the Nihon Shoki?"

The arrogant professor smirked, tightened his hachimaki, and smugly replied "Kanji, you baka."

"True, Kanji, which loosely translates into "Han characters." To be precise the Nihon Shoki is written in Guwen, which is Classical Chinese script. If the Japanese are indeed perfect human beings then they would have come up with their own culture & civilization as opposed to just borrowing from the Chinese or from anyone else."

The Professor was visibly shaken and dropped his calligraphy brush and copy of CLAMP's Cardcaptor Sakura. He stormed out of the room and tried to commit seppuku like in his animes.

The students applauded with a big "wansui!" and all signed up with the Popular Uprising that day and declared that the scholar-gentleman has the Mandate of Heaven. A dragon named "All Under Heaven" flew into the room and coiled around the Chinese flag and magically turned it yellow. The Analects was read several times, and the Jade Emperor himself showed up and enacted territorial seizures of disputed territories around the country.

The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He died of complications caused by an erroneous performance of the seppuku ritual and went to Diyu, where he is tried, found guilty, and punished by the Ten Yama Kings of Diyu.

>an exchange of diverging or opposite views, typically a heated or angry one.
>typically a heated or angry one.
Arguments are bad, discussions and debate are good.

First of all, the test can only be but so accurate, so trying to measure small changes is pointless. Give it 6 months and really make some progress before you come back.

This test, for me, seems to be accurate and actually reflects changes in my study habit. Pic related is the result of focusing primarily on listening practice, and completing grammar workbooks (using 日本語総まとめN3/N2), but more or less dropping anki. (Don't drop anki.)

365lb is not that extreme actually, with consistent training almost any male can get there.

compare it to driving a car, using a firearm, or doing electrical work, i dunno. yes, these things are dangerous and 1 mistake can end you. but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do them; it just means you have to be responsible and alert.

i was irresponsible: still semidrunk from the night before, tired as fuck, and in a hurry to finish before classes started. in the past i would have gotten a good night's sleep looking forward to the next day's lifts, or decided to wait until later in the day or whatever. but after a while it gets routine, you get complacent, you forget the rules, and then boom, disaster strikes.

I actually think it's a good idea. 1k words are enough to get a person ready to read, and it makes people reach the interesting bits half as fast. It's also small enough that you can make a fine selection of good words to learn that don't include shit like 不動産, which is comparatively of very little value for somebody who will start reading through manga, VNs, and LNs.

And the words appear on the deck in the order they appear on the work you're reading so you don't have to wait until you're done with the deck to read it. This way even beginners can achieve comparatively high reading speeds and enjoyment for their level.

A couple anki questions:
is there a "right way" to set steps and the interval modifier to learn things (specifically core vocab) optimally or do you just go by what works for you? Ive seen people suggest aiming for 90% fail but is there any reason not to aim higher besides efficiency?
>>
>>135480625

In those situations, sometimes I pass it, sometimes I fail it. It doesn't really matter. I grade things more on when I want to see the card again rather than actual difficulty. Sometimes I hit hard on a card I know because I want to see it sooner, and sometimes I hit easy on a card I failed because I don't want to see it for awhile.
>>
>>135479998
Chiitrans seems to be the best one out.
Also these texthookers can hook into MPC or KanjiTomo to make lookups a snap for watching shows or reading manga.

Just make sure you're mining words and reviewing them. With a mouse-over dictionary, lookup is so smooth and easy that it's very tempting to use it like a crutch. Whereas with a regular dictionary, it's quite arduous to look words up repeatedly, so you'll naturally start to write down and review what you've learned to make sure that it sticks.
>>
>>135481885

Because the same thing happens in English. If there are two people, one named Tom, one named Torn, I might mistake one for the other.
