To explain, in full detail:

Gachimuchi originally started out as the Japanese equivalent of rick-rolling, where people would trick others into viewing this video: http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1175788

It probably would have ended at that, like it did in the West, if it were not for two factors: the persistence of the Otaku fandom, and the relative tolerance and stability of Niconico Douga at the time.

Its important to remember that in the West in 2008, Youtube was just establishing its preeminence, video parodies were still largely spread on forums or 4chan, and Flash was largely still the great creative output of Internet fads and remixes. Even Reddit (yeah, yeah, I know) was a relative obscurity.

In Japan however, you already had a stable community in the form of Niconico Douga and the long tradition of 2channel. First, this (along with wikis) provided a stable base collaborate anonymously or pseudonymously. Second Niconico was and still is different in that the content you upload is not re-encoded, as long as it is under 100MB and encoded correctly. This allowed people to exchange, clips, bluescreens, and other sources at high fidelity, when 360p with a terrible bitrate was the norm on Youtube. Third, there was, and still is, a common video editing for the Japanese which is free, powerful, streamlined for Niconico upoading and has a relatively low learning curve: aviutil.

All these together made it feasible for people to come together and make complex alterations and additions to the original source by employing the resources of others, and adding whatever content they produced online. This is why you had decent 音MAD and collaborations as soon as 08-09, while in the West we were still stuck on Flash and AMVs.

Factor this, along with a little light-hearted joking at the silly antics of Westerners, and a huge fanbase which compiled years upon years of in-jokes and mishearings, and you have a tradition which has lasted nearly a decade.

In the West, quality YTPMVs and 音MAD really picked up in 2012 and onward, and now its too the point where authors have parity, but less products on Youtube than what you will find on Niconico.

Koreans also use Youtube, but spread info through dcnside and other such sites.

In China, its all SFW because their video site, Bilibili, basically purges all explicit mentions of sexuality, and especially homosexuality. There are still plenty of good 音MAD makers there, too.

It was really fast in retrospect, but once Niconico abandoned using Youtube as th backend, things fell into place pretty face for a variety of reasons:

1. Hiro, our current admin and previous admin of 2channel, was one of the founders, and as a result, a large chunk of the 2channel userbase migrated their video production over to Niconico in short order, since there was an expectation of the same consistency and stability as was seen on Niconico. This largely remains the case, in that the Niconico of 2008 and today are functionally nearly identical.

2. Doujin groups switched from Flash to Niconico video production in short manner, due to the greater flexibility of the latter, bringing the creative output of the doujin community firmly into Niconico, where it has remained.

3. The Japanese just really like the "danmaku" style comment system, which has only really been replicated on Chinese and Korean clone sites.

Truth be told, danmaku does not work as well for alphabet systems. See, with Japanese, you can pull off an independent, original comment in 10-15 characters, and even less with Chinese. Its is no coincidence that danmaku is also used on the most popular otaku site in China (bilibili).

Unless you just spout memetic phrases (which does happen on NND also), you get the problem where the text just zooms off the screen, since danmaku accelerates in speed in accordance to the amount of characters, unless you select your comment to be centered.

I can only think of plugins for Western sites (like pic related), but they generally stink.
