I can't even remember what happened in the last chapter. Are we even close to setting off for the Dark Continent, or is there more endless preparation?

Hard to tell. Did anyone think Chimera ants was going to eclipse every arc before it in size? And this literally sets itself up to do the same thing to Chimera ants. This is TTGL levels of "let's go one bigger guize". Obviously Kurapika is going to get some eyes, ideally, and this Don Freecs guy is probably going to help Gon get his Nen back somehow, but beyond that there is literally no telling.

There's no reason to care about Hunter X Hunter, the story was over when Gon found his dad. Now there is nothing worth looking forward to, there's no investment anymore. Sure the unknown continent will certainly be full of fights, plot twists, betrayals, gimmicks... but none of it matters... nobody cares about the zodiacs, or beyond netero and his group of weirdos, or the princes, all these new uninteresting characters who will be the focus of this new arc.

That's the difference with Berserk, a manga also riddled with long hiatuses. The main conflict between Guts and Griffith has yet to be concluded, all the investment is still there. With HxH it's like Guts has already beaten Griffith but afterwards evil aliens came on earth and now Guts must defeat this new alien race, there's no reason to give a fuck.

Honestly Togashi should just end it how it is and just give us a text summary of the ending, because I don't want to deal with this shit anymore. Glad Madhouse ended the recent anime at the perfect point I didn't cocktease us with Netero's son as the final scene.

It will be interesting watching the slow, whimpering demise of HxH on /a/. Each subsequent year bringing nothing but unfulfilled hopes. Threads stagnating under seemingly endless faggot posting until even that runs dry and we get a new HxH thread with the same frequency of REAL threads.
Or maybe the 2016 revival will tough this series as well. Only Togashi knows.
