Pretty much this.
Strictly speaking the novels have a bad habit of establishing things that just get completely ignored later, like the wolf bones, map to Yoitsu, and any legends of Holo or her friends. So the only real arc is that of the characters.

Despite that it's still one of my favorite series because the characters are so damn good. But if you don't fall in love with the characters by the end of Volume 1 or the first 6 episodes of the anime you should probably give it a pass.

The wolf bones issue was resolved like two volumes later, the map to Yoitsu did turn out to be pointless but it's not like it was dropped, and legends about Holo and her friends had a direct impact on the latter part of the story and was even one of the driving issues in the final arc.

I dunno, I think all three matter a great deal when they add up to the reason why Holo decides not to return to Yoitsu at all. It's the same problem I had with S2's skipping of the Elsa arc - what happened didn't have any great impact on the destination, but it was definitely an important step in the Holo/Lawrence dynamic that made the Lenos arc hit much harder.

If it were furbait you'd see autistic furries talk about it non-stop.

I've always wondered if Japan could get onto the kickstater/patreon train and use it to fund random animes that have no chance of getting made otherwise.

Clearly people want them, but anime isn't profitable and only really exists to advertise a manga, LN, or merch. So I think it would make sense to just cut out the middleman and just pay for it up front.
