This was pretty much a rush job seeing as the only time he was "abused" by Brandish was after shrinking him which didn't even seem that serious, more of a comedic foil and all she did was placed him in a container to prevent from peeking at ladies in that bath scene. Hell the only reason she shrunk him was because Natsu was speaking Nakama after beating up Mest making them even.

There was literally no build up for that just shows Marin's fucking psycho if he wanted to straight up kill Brandish instead of abandoning her if he hated being a henchmen so much.

Even with them both defeated, the series could still continue. Look at Naruto and Bleach, the goalposts for those series were constantly moving around. Just saying, unless it was officially confirmed to be the climax, never assume with long shonen.
