You know the real reason was to set the tone for the series that they wanted to give you the impression it was 'darker' than most magical girl series and set up Hibiki and Tsubasa not getting along at first and eventually Chris's invitation into the fold due to proper befriending later in the season.
That said it's quite sad to have a character made just to die in the first episode only to haunt the cast for the whole season.

To give Tsubasa her character and motivation. Near the start, her entire deal is she's still moping around from losing Kanade, and is pretty much looking for a death on the battlefield. Then some little shit turns up wearing Kanade's armour and is all like 'I'll replace Kanade!'
