Guy is a college student, having relationship problems with girlfriend (who he cares a lot about, but they don't seem to communicate well) who is heavily involved with her professor's research around alien lifeforms. He gets one and they revive it in a lab but the girlfriend dies in the process, and guy has something happen to him that gives him partly alien-like properties. Meanwhile the alien escapes and starts hanging out with a preteen girl who's strangely reminiscent of the guy's dead girlfriend. Guy gets convinced by a shadowy Mephistopheles type dude to join up with Funeral, a military agency that deals with aliens, to find out more about the EX-1 (the first alien) and presumably destroy it as revenge.

Not a great summary, but the show is pretty good. First episode should be enough to let you know what you're in for story- and tone-wise.

I thought the worldbuilding was very good, in the first half. It was pretty vivid and unique, and it was not told amazingly, but decently enough that the typical contrived, early-story conflicts weren't a chore to sit through.

This also came through in the resolution, where, despite becoming completely garbage in the second half, and despite the large number of plotholes, it had at least a couple twists at the end that were engaging.

I think it could have been a really great story if it had been handled differently. I watched this anime years ago, and here I am, still talking about it.

It's not completely forgotten but Outlaw Star deserve more attention. It got everything : great animation, likeable cast (except samurai), god tier opening, interesting setting, it's fun, the story is interesting and the ending satisfying. Sunrise at it's finest.

This show was alright, it should have stayed an OVA like the original four episodes which were better than the rest. You can easily see exactly when they have to budget. Decent, worth a watch if you want to remember staying up late to watch any anime that was being shown.

Yeah the atmosphere seems nice and slow, but I'm afraid the world-building turns out dumb a bit like Kamichu! with some weird things like "somebody ressurected" or something, I didn't get lot from episode one but seems strange. Also the storytelling don't take you for a child explaining everything that's nice, but to be honest I'm not really in the mood to being lost in my anime currently.
