For Battle of Gods, Super moved Bulma's birthday to a ship, basically removed all scenes related to Pillaf, making their presence really random. They also tried to make all scenes dragged out. The true Gohan is the SoL episodes that even talked how important train is to keep Earth safe and the Gohan in the fights that can't be strong to fight the villain because that would make Goku less cool. This is the same reason Buu wasn't allowed to join them in RoF but he is in U6 arc.

The real problem is that the script writers clearly realize that it makes sense for Gohan to train in order to protect his loved ones, and so he has dialogue mentioning that - even in this episode he was talking about having a family now and his responsibility and such.

Your scenario only works if Freeza was the one who one-shotted Goku. Goku conceded and thanked Vegeta for saving his life after Vegeta stepped in and just let him have his turn.

And Goku learned his lesson and quickly killed Freeza, when Whis gave him another chance. IF Vegeta went first and Goku had to save him, then died, like Vegeta did, then I could see Vegeta stepping in and quickly finishing, like Goku does, AFTER Whis rewinds time.

Vegeta cleaning up after Goku and not getting a comeuppance after ignoring his master's assessment of his key personality fault would be a shitty ending to the film, outside those people who stupidly judge DBZ characters worth by their kill count vs them contributing when it counts.
