The manga is popular.
But I agree, its vastly underrated. Its easily my favorite love story. I find it funny how one of the main criticisms is that it wasn't melodramatic.

I liked it a lot for the first few episodes.
The characters are enjoyable and I think the production quality is good.
My problem with it was the plot.
After Takeo and Rinko get together it felt like there was no more conflict or character development to be had.

Because Takeo is a giant(figuratively) gary stu, and once the show springs it's only surprise then the remaining 20 or so episodes were all predictable as shit. It's good for what it is, but anyone with taste is going to get tired of it sooner or later.
