I'm not sure if she felt like they will never undersand each other. and didn't want to try.
Every time Asuka tries to talk to Rei i had the feeling Rei was thinking: Oh, her, again, let's get this over with.

I can't remeber if the rebuild and series elevator scene are the sam (other than Rei stopping the slap in rebuild). Did she try to confide her feelings for Shinji in the series?

When they meet Rei has pretty much no opinion of Asuka, but as time goes on they grate on one another more and more.
