There are very few relatable characters in any media, to be fair.

Alot of characters people find relatable are just negative caricatures played for laughs (I'm lazy too!) or the "nihilistic with a wicked sense of humor" types.

I'm not sure where this meme came from that escapism needed some kind of self-insert, just having interesting characters is fine.

What the fuck are you talking about? A medium doesn't have to have "relatable characters" in order to be good.
"Under the Dome" by Stephen King was very good, but I didn't associate myself with any of the characters. And anyway, people are from so many different backgrounds, have so many different stories that what doesn't cater to your mental illness will cater to someone else's.

I wasn't going to bother looking for a better screenshot and I sure as hell won't download that movie.

You don't have to relate to a character to enjoy one.
On the other hand, I could probably find some things in Shinji that I would find relatable, but I'm still going to find his character not very entertaining.
