It's as overlong as his nose. At this point the manga just has to end, so that we can get Akagi S2 and then a Ten anime.

Oh, who am I kidding? First of all, Akagi is Kindai Mahjong's main cash cow and will never end. Secondly, the post-anime Akagi drags on so much that the 4 cours it would last for would be horrifically boring. There's no hope for more anime in the Akagi continuum.

It's great, I marathoned all 170 chapters in a few days. At the same time I admit it's really dragged out. We'll never see the conclusion at this rate.

The art is extremely charming and Fukumoto is great at expressing emotions. It's not filled with extreme detail like Berserk of Vinland Saga but he has his own style and is very loved for it. A pioneer. Akagi is a great manga filled with suspense but sure, it does help knowing some things about mahjong.

I agree with most of the general positive comments. The anime is a masterpiece, and it effectively intensifies the manga's story and gives a much more satisfying end than the manga (which has no end, currently). It's a timeless classic, and hasn't aged much in the 10 years since it came out.

The mahjong was pretty boring for me, I couldn't even watch Saki when Saki makes it really easy to follow the drama without knowing anything about the game and gives them magic and shit.
So I read Kurosawa, I loved that, I didn't understand that it was pretty much just an extension of the final 30 chapters of Ten which I only read because anon raved about it.
Pretty much the final 30 chapters of Ten is every fukumoto work ever without the mahjong and I suggest anyone that doesn't like the mahjong read it.

If you go for them they aren't particularly hard. The problem is 3/4 (actually 25/34) of all your draws are completely useless and you will be dealing a lot of dangerous tiles (especially when you are in a different suit than the dora) until you finally make your hand.

In this case it's south 4 and he can't end up last unless he deals haneman or higher, so he can be a little more reckless.
