You will find most seiyuu advice against it. It's a big gamble and the market is over saturated.

I've listened to loads of web radios and every time a reader letter that asks advices for becoming seiyuu, the personalities answer "don't do it" or at least "finish university", "be prepared for failure" and such.

Kamiya has said that only people who really love their work can aim for a long seiyuu career since getting popular enough to stay in the business for more than few years is ridiculously hard and even then it might not be enough to pay the bills.
Even Sugita said that a big part of success is being lucky enough to have an audience that likes your voice and new roles that are actually appropriate for your voice.

Risa Taneda falls in love with a KENN.

Thoughts? It's good advice. Only a couple dozen seiyuu will get a reasonable amount of work over the span of several years. Even if they do, they rely on alternative sources of income to supplement the job. In terms of how rare it is to "succeed", how long a "successful" "career" can expect to last, and how many people get a marginal amount of work, it is comparable to professional sports but without any of the rewards.

The other work I'm aware of for popular seiyuu is still in the entertainment industry. The point is that they cannot rely entirely on income from voice acting itself.

Much like people trying to become actors in the US, those who haven't become popular enough to rely on entertainment work normal part-time jobs. That could be anything from serving tables to serving men. This is true of people trying to break in to the entertainment industry in every country which has one.
