SAO is good for what it is and what it wants to be: a light-hearted adventure manga/anime with good action scenes and some interesting ideas. It's the same as DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, Outlaw Star, Bleach, Gintama, and the other anime that hit it big in the West with this audience. It's not 2deep4u and it's not trying to be. It's fine. It has some good games, too.

SAO's anime and web novel are shit. They're barely above fanfiction. They get carried on cool concept alone before everyone realizes it's really about Kirito's Happy Adventures in Harem Sword Land.

The Progressive novel is significantly better on the basis the author has more experience and improved his abilities by writing several other successful novels. SAO was his first creation around 14 years ago. Please go read progressive novels.

Mother's Rosario is good but is kind of plagued with the original's issues. They can't seem to get out of Kirito's shadow for one, he shows up to "save" them. Yuuki is constantly compared to him. Of course the only player better than him is dying of cancer so tragically.

The first season of Tokyo Ghoul was actually fine.
I'm halfway through Root A and so far it's pretty much Nothing But Random Fighting Scenes: Season 2. I feel like the animu doesn't even really touch what everyone's motivations are either. I never watched the anime but I played through Hollow Fragment. Besides Asuna saying Kirito-kun every other sentence, all the characters seemed likeable and the world was engrossing. Philia is 10/10.

SAO is simply best in its own genre (power fantasy, not the VRMMO thingy). if you dislike PF's and intentional Mary Sue'ish characters, obviously you won't like it. Otherwise, it's a very good anime and stellar light novel.

SAO is the worst kind of soulless wish fulfillment, Toyko Ghoul is okay but too conventional and ultimately forgettable, SnK is actually a genuine work of fiction full of personality, even if it's chock full of teenage angst.

If SAO branched off to two seasons where they show Kirito slowly progress to the powerhouse he was and then go through the levels, it would have been miles better.
