Mai is an interesting and likable character. She is very kind and polite but nonetheless shows considerable mental fortitude and determination. She doesn't act stupidly, is levelheaded, brave, quick-thinking and competent (thought not overwhelmingly so as she doesn't always succeed and does need help from others at times).

And she shows considerable character development over the course of her series. Mai was cast out of her family by her harsh father and sent to a boarding school, which caused her to feel abandoned and unwanted. However she was able to adapt to her new environment, as well as learn to open herself to and trust others as well as to make friends. Her friends in turn helped Mai to accept herself as she was and to overcome the feelings of inadequacy caused by her father's treatment of her. And in spite all of her personal difficulties and troubled past, Mai remained throughout a kind and caring girl who loves to help others.

I wouldn't call it generic though. They whole premise is very original if you ask me. The harem part may be generic, but there isn't a love interesting so far. Maybe Ayane, but I don't know.

The parodies are funny, not all, but most of them, and the art is not bad. The thing that keeps me reading it, is the comedy though. And lets face it, it has a good PLOT .

Although, it's 7/10 at least.

Mai isn't a Mary Sue; I already mentioned that she's not perfect. She makes mistakes, such as trusting a guy who was out to harm her, and isn't exceptionally powerful compared to the rest of the characters in her series. She doesn't win every fight she ends up in and does at times need the help and support of others in order to succeed. Also she's not universally loved everyone around her. Mai does have friends, but she's not the school idol or anything like that.

In summary Mai makes mistakes, isn't particularly powerful and isn't especially popular, so she doesn't fit the definition of Mary Sue.
