I ment they didn't have much characterization other than some basic personality traits but other than that, they never really grew as characters. Patamon and Tailmon did grow into their own characters though the series. Though Tailmon's was kinda haulted after being united wuth Hikari.

Overall I think it was a underwhelmingly received show. But I think throughout the series there were evidence of good story telling such as Takato's anger channelling dark digivolution, Impmon's struggle with acceptance with his former tamers and some existential insight into the the ideal of digimon and self. Although these were a glimpse of good writing, it is offset by elements like rika's relationship with her mother, jeri's depression and the bowing down to letting kids handle the mess a small group of social inept programmers did.

They tried a darker setting but failed when trying to keep it in line with prime time slot tryouts.

Watch Cencoroll and you will appreciate the arstyle more. The movie is about giant monsters fighting eachother, not unlike the Greymon vs Parrotmon movie and Digimon.
