I've been (slowly) trying to catch up from the very beginning and just finished 34 (Shun vs Sora finale) and holy shit, that was the best duel in the series so far, and I say this after Yuya vs Sawatari 2 right before this almost made me feel like dropping the series.

Does the series get more of this kind of duel later on, where action fields/cards are actually used as a way to spice up the duel and not just another flavor of topdecking bullshit(or worse, a way to complement the topdecking bullshit)?

During the LDS duels, Sora was just talking about his candy, not how the XYZ was within his expectations, or how he reacted to fusion from Masumi. The dub also royally screwed up when Sora went to LDS to check out Reiji, he wanted to DUEL Reiji, but the dub said that he wanted Reiji to teach him, which we all know is bullshit and in no way is coherent to his personality.

Started watching Arc-V a few days back, currently at episode 20. It's fine. The duels are insane by now with all "muh entertainment" going on but the protagonist is fine. Overall, it's watchable unlike Zexal, that was hard. The thing I find lacking is characters - concerning named charcters everyone so far except for Yuya and Reiji are boring as hell. Same shit with Zexal, mostly boring characters - in both personality and design. This is kind of new since original DM had Yugi, Atem, Bakura, Marik and Kaiba. GX really provided an all-round fun cast of characters with (shit gameplay-wise) fantastic one themed decs (too bad most of the duels was only Judai). 5D's had fuckin' amazing cast in first 64 episodes. After that it added Sherry and Bruno and that was it. Zexal and Arc-V are bloody boring so far in character department. But that might change, only at 20 episode so far.

Also, another thing that changed are openings. YGO! used to have great openings with great songs. Zexal was utter dogshit and first Arc-V OP is also weak as hell. Remembering Wild Drive, Teardrop and Endou Masaaki's 5D's openings… what happened. YGO! openings used to be awesome. Now it seems like it's just random boring j-pop or something.

It's up there with Rising Weather Hallelujah in terms of shit

And personally, none of Arc-V's soundtrack really stands out as good, the only ones I've bothered remembering is those 2 themes that play when Yuto and Shun show up, really damn weak for a YGO soundtrack

I felt that in retrospect, Arc-V's openings and endings are just used mostly for catching you off guard like GX's first ones for when shit actually happens.
Though unlike GX, they never really discard that guise and keep insisting that everything is good and fine with every subsequent event of significance that occurs.
