Most western cartoons simply look like shit (graphically). Most of it is fucking depressing lineart flash with low detail. On the opposite end we have awesome lineart flash with high detail, such as wakfu. I think the Japanese might enjoy wakfu if they actually heard of it for starters.

Expelled from Paradise is on the cusp of barely being good enough. Mecha being animated in 3D like Valvrave/MJP/A.Z with 2D settings and characters is alright. The only fully 3DCG anime I'd call good would be from a couple of the Animator Expo shorts. Sidonia looks weird, and I am still planning on watching it, but it is off-putting how choppy it looks. The problem is more that 3DCG anime (which includes MMD-tier shit) is trying to fake being 2D with terrible cel-shading. Things like Fireball or Miss Monochrome's ED, things where they're not ashamed of the fact that it's animated in 3DCG, are good.

Similarly to the popularity of SOLs; it's all about the characters. If you love the characters, you could watch an episode of them sitting around watching paint dry and still find it enjoyable. Conversely if you don't like the characters, the idea of that would be dismal.
(Of course, SOLs are usually much better written that RWBY is.)

Aside from that, the character designs are cute, the fights are sometimes nice to watch, and the sources that the characters are based on is familiar, so people are interested in seeing what storybook/historical/etc character will be incarnated next, what they'll look like, how they'll behave, and how their source might affect all these things.

It's a very liberal Japanese take on PPG. A lot of things to nitpick about (and get legitimately mad about, like the fact that they're no longer sisters) if you want faithfulness to the original but otherwise, it's not inherently bad in my opinion. It's a pretty good mahou shoujo show by itself.

I question that myself too. I have been a /co/mrade for 5 years and I'm getting more and more disinterested in cartoons. There's just too many restrictions and shit scheduling that makes no lick of sense. It's a very stagnated medium and it's awful that there's only like three companies(Nick CN, Disney) dedicated to cartoons and they all just suck at it. Even "adult" cartoons are just edge sitcom shit which loops back to entertaining kids. Star and Gravity Falls are probably the only shows I have a genuine interest in. A lot of /co/s cartoon side of the board seems to be totally against the notion of going outside of stuff readily accessible on TV, writing off anything that comes out of Europe or Japan. There are also generals for every shitty show like Shezow or Littlest Pet Shop and they obsess over the shittiest porn just because they only have Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon girls to cling to.

I'm guessing they're less interested in the stories or animation and just care about the general culture and nostalgia that comes with the material, because with a few exceptions the movie and comic fanbases on the board don't have the same issues.

Me too. I mainly watched Avatar for the fight scenes, but Legend of Aang was also a fun adventure show. Kinda reminded me of Dragon Ball.

I've yet to watch Wakfu, but it looks good. I also want to try Over the Garden Wall. To me, anime is just more consistent with the things I like, but it's not like I outgrew western cartoons.
