They're afraid of the heavens, as in the divine mystery of celestial bodies, ie the stars, which the Vertexes represent. But consider this. Any Japanese reading 天空恐怖症候群 will know instantly what it means, as the word consists of sky, fear, syndrome. In contrast, an English reader reading Uranophobia is unlikely to recognise it. As evinced by the people in these threads, most people don't know the word. Therefore, unless you've studied Latin to some degree, you'll probably read it as "fear of Uranus", as I did when I first saw it. This, of course, inspires very different connotations to that which a Japanese reader would visualise upon reading it. I argue that the aim of the translation should be to as best as possible recreate for the reader the thoughts that reading it natively would provide, and although that's of course not possible to do perfectly due to limitations of the English language, I think "sky fear syndrome" achieves that better.

Unless we get a new character as the lead, I think Inubosaki Itsuki wa Yuusha de Aru would make the most sense for the next series. Having Itsuki as the center of the next Hero Club with the rest of the Yuusha as cool senpais would work well.

I actually think it's necessary to somewhat side line the current cast. Karin, Fuu and Togou finished their character arcs, and adding more drama to them would feel wrong. As supporting characters they can show up and contribute to the story, but they don't have to go through much character development, which would be great since they are fine as they are.
Itsuki going from a supporting to a leader position would allow for some natural growth that wouldn't feel forced.
And she really isn't that much like Madoka. She has a lot of snark in her role as the tsukkomi to Fuu's boke, and during the battle with the stardust she displays an aggressive streak that Madoka simply does not possess.

I don't think there's any risk of not seeing plenty more of Sonoko. The only one who might lose out is Fuu, but even then chances are that her high-school's Hero Club will be the second one to mobilize after the big announcement, or there'll be a convenient timeskip, or else they'll just shrug and do the Buchou Emeritus thing and have her show up in most of the scenes anyway despite not going to their school. I certainly don't see her letting her friends and little sister fight alone.

It's not happening. Even the interim material is all about them gearing up to return to the fight and trying to find out more about the Taisha's mysteries.

I could give you Sonoko being greater than Karin, but she's not on the level of Shiratori and Gin. It's not just that they died, it's how they died, with Shiratori holding the line by herself for years and Gin dying on her feet, making sure no vertex would come back through that barrier again.
