Other protags lived a pretty good (Yuma , Yugi, Judai) to Ok (Yusei) life up to their show starts. Even then, Judai ended up losing and becoming evil for half a season. And then losing the meaning of friends until the end of season 4. Being bullied throughout your childhood and having one of your only friends taken away from you is probably going to mess your head up. That and Tou-san's shitty advice falling apart now.

I realized those times where Yuzu did run off, Yuya didn't care and Sora and Tasyuya warned about taking her for granted. Now it's crashing down. Fuck, I missed this series forshadowing

Reiji's deck correlates directly to how he handles pretty much everything. He makes deals with forces that may be beyond his control so that he can get ahead. When the deals go sour (symbolized by the damage of his effects and Covenants), he either uses that to his advantage, nullifies the "bad parts", or completely ditches the contract and thrusts his problems on somebody else.

The heavy foreshadowing tied up in both Reiji's character and his deck imply that he'll eventually kill himself on Covenants one day. For a while, /a/rc-v thought that was going to likely happen in a duel with his father, since the obvious Father/Son parallels were there to draw, but that post reminded me that we saw him forge an agreement with Yuya, who is rapidly spiraling out of Reiji's control.

Put 2 and 2 together and you get a number that might be 4.
