RIP archive
>>
Anyone else remember easy modo?
>>
At some point they will realize that they need to stop trying to collect all the /v/ shit.
>>
>>131873997
Well shit.

Even when it was up the status page stopped loading for me around the same time the search died.
>>
Who or what is fetcher?
>>
The on-board archives last a week, as long as archive.moe isn't down that long it can just scrape those to catch up.

>>131874374
What fetches the posts, obviously.
>>
>>131874405
>a week
I thought it was 2 days?
>>
>>131874123
This. Force /v/ and its spin-offs to maintain their own archive.
>>
>>131874469
It changed, you can see for yourself by opening the archives, slapping the end key, and seeing the oldest thread.
>>
>>131874516
I see. Well, we still lose everything that was deleted, so probably a bunch of off-topic discussions and shit threads.
>>
Moe was probably the worst archive we ever had.
>>
>>131874560
That's actually a fair point, I hadn't considered that.

That guy always talking about troid is going to add the archives going down to his conspiracy, isn't he? Since it won't scrape deleted posts of his.
>>
>>131874674
Theres a big kerfluff about it in the sadpanda thread, because Daiz showed up and a bunch of posts got DMCA'd for linking to a blog with ripped Fakku content.
>>
>>131874586
moe is just the latest incarnation of easymodo
>>
>>131874586
Green-oval didn't work half the time
>>
Tell me,how many servers had we used? What becomes of the old servers?
>>
>>131874586
It works great when it's actually up. Green-Oval was the worst. My favorite is still Foolz though. I wish they hadn't quit.

He should really stop archiving /v/, I expect more shitposting and console wars than anything worth discussing coming from it. It's one of the fastest boards too so there must be lots of crap.

Someone from /v/ should make its own one if there's anything important to archive.
>>
>>131874716
So daiz is finally showing his true colors? Strange that fakku rips are still on nyaa.
>>
After that /r9k/ shit the archive went down.
I bet it's their fault and the fbi is abusing the archive.
>>
>>131874846
/v/ermin will throw a fit, but it needs to be done. Everything worth remembering from /v/ is already immortalized in screencaps anyway, they don't need a comprehensive archive.

And if they want one, then one of their own should assume the burden.
>>
>>131874047
Of course. RIP.
>>
>>131874934
>screencaps
>unreadable messes with more reaction images than stuff that you actually want to read
>>
So is everything older than a week ago dust in the wind?
>>
>>131874923
I know the timing seems more than coincidental, but rationally speaking I don't see (1) why the archives would only fail to traffic now when the story broke days ago or (2) why the FBI would need to shut down the archives to peruse them. In fact, 4chan still has the original data and has likely handed it over already.
>>
I thought it was the shooting shenanigan.
Some FBI investigation or something
>>
Baits will become brand new in an instant
>>
>>131874988
I feel their hideous shitpost collages capture the aesthetic of the board far better than an archive ever could. Really gives you a feel for how the people there think.
>>
>>131873997
Personally, I don't mind. 4chan was never meant to be archived. Archive singular threads that are worth keeping, but don't archive everything.
>>
>>131875001
>Everything
Only whatever was posted when the archive was down.
>>
Can we go back to a system where people need to vote for a thread to be archived?
>>
>>131875025
>why the FBI would need to shut down the archives to peruse them.
They don't need to because they have their own archive with PRISM. Anything said on 4chan is logged automatically.
>>
>>131874923
>>131875025
They would go to the fucking source, not to a third party's "archive".

What's wrong with you OP.
>>
>>131875001
Just the stuff deleted while the fetcher was down, and the stuff pushed off 4chan's archive in that time span.

The old posts are still archived and can be rehosted if it comes to that. The issue right now is that the fetching of posts is down so there will be gaps.
>>
>>131875098
No.
>>
I call for a ban on pepe and any other meme reaction image. Anybody in favor?
>>
>>131875078
I never even learned how to vote for archival. When I came to 4chan there was already a real archive and people who were trying to enforce on-site archival were laughed out of the board.
>>
>>131875078
>>131875121
That was my point, the FBI has more valid sources to work with.
>>
>>131875098

>>131875078

>>
So they're not overloaded due to a certain public incident?
>>
>>131875188
>meme
Try to define that. You are probably going to run into a wall with your idea of a ban.
Much better to leave it to the discretion of good mods what constitutes shitposting, because that can catch everything or nothing depending on who's in charge.
>>
>>131875231
I miss the days when we could use the word "epic" without its neo-/b/ connotations.
>>
>>131875098
I always hated that. People would try to show off in the hopes getting into the archive and then shamelessly beg for archive votes. Created a fake, tryhard atmosphere similar to what you see on reddit where people desperately want upvotes and into the gold club.
>>
>>131875219
Whoops, meant to quote >>131875150
>>
Whoever runs the archive next needs to just dump everything other than /a/, /m/, and /jp/
>>

>But I like reading threads that I couldn't keep track when they were alive because IRL shit.
But that is part of the beauty of 4chan. You need to give up on life to fully enjoy it. Also, every repost is a repost repost. You can literally have the same discussion the next day and probably have the same people replying the very same things.

>>131875268
The archive was going down a lot before the incident happened. It was down even before someone linked the incident with /r9k/.
>>
>>131875333
No so. There are regular manga dumps and live TLs that happen only once a week, if you miss the thread you need the archive to read them. It's that or wait weeks for the chapter to be posted somewhere online.
>>
>>131875333
I for one recycle every good post I make in subsequent threads. It's just a pain to keep track of them when I can't look them up in the archive.

Maybe I should start an offline collection of shit I posted on 4chan.
>>
>>131875231
Yes, that's how I use it too. And I keep around some with nice info or discussions. It's also pretty useful to find some nice rare shit you guys scanned, ripped or translated while I wasn't around.
>>
>>131875333
That hasn't been true since 2012.

Especially for stuff like live-manga TL, which happens often on /a/.
>>
>>131875374
>No so. There are regular manga dumps and live TLs that happen only once a week, if you miss the thread you need the archive to read them. It's that or wait weeks for the chapter to be posted somewhere online.
People took care of that by manually archiving things. Back when we didn't have archives people saved things locally and uploaded them for others on request.
>>
Whatever happened to redundancy? /tg/ and /pol/ both have 2 archivers (moe and 4plebs).
>>
>>131874716
Can you indirectly point me to said Fakku blog?
>>
>>131875424
There's nothing stopping them from doing that right now, yet they don't. If you miss a leak thread you either read the archives or you won't see that content until it's officially released days or sometimes weeks later.

Also I use the archive to find source for shows, manga, and porn. It's an incredibly useful resource. The only problem I have with it is it has all this bloat by archiving boards that don't need an archive.
>>
>>131875521
>The only problem I have with it is it has all this bloat by archiving boards that don't need an archive.
It's the same problem that the NSA has.
How much information is enough information?

>There's nothing stopping them from doing that right now, yet they don't. If you miss a leak thread you either read the archives or you won't see that content until it's officially released days or sometimes weeks later.
They don't because of the archive. If there's no archive, people will start saving things again. Once the convenience of the archive is lost, people will cease being lazy and backup things locally again.
>>
>>131875583
If they had that attitude they'd try to archive /b/. They just want the major discussion boards, but they should just chuck 80% of them.

>>131875674
/a/ can be helpful when you're not just a lazy asshole who didn't even try to find it.
>>
>>131875709
I actually think /a/ hated /v/ the most a few years ago. People used to accuse anyone they didn't like of being from /v/. Nowadays, I don't think people care that much about /v/ any more, while the board might not be overly popular, it's not as hated as back then.
>>
They have their usefulness but I only really liked the archives before they became common knowledge amongst /v/ermin types and people who never lurked.

I used to look forward to /a/ going down because I knew there were be some ghostbros waiting in the archive for what was better discussion of anime and manga than 99% of what we had on 4chan. There was no shitposting there in those days. I've only used the archives a slack handful of times over the years to look up things I wanted to find.
>>
>>131875709
/v/ stopped being about video games and became /b/ 2.0. Nobody likes /b/ and we certainly didn't need a second one.
>>
>>131875751

>>
>>131875709

>>

>>
>>131875788
This. Discussion used to be chill as fuck, now its just cancer trying to meme their hardest.
>>
>>131875709
/a/ forgot it's tsundere for /v/ because the tsun was much too big compared to the dere.

Do you have that one haruhi doujin where it's /a/ and /v/ fucking when some other board walks in on them? That was the best edit.

The most impressive thing about /a/ and /v/ is how, although people keep saying that /a/ is turning into /v/, it's actually the opposite taking place. With each passing day, /v/ looks more and more like /a/.
>>
>>131875725
I am aware of that. Still, it's still better than nothing until the admin running moe kicks /v/ content from the servers.
>>
>>131875738
>archiving a board automatically where illegal content is posted regularly
Retard alert
>>
>>131875772
They have a archive now and it's as ineffective as one would think removing that content timely.
>>
I marathoned Pleiades post-season because of RL shit, so I used the archives to follow the discussion and pretending was watching it with /a/nons.
>>
>>131875869
>With each passing day, /v/ looks more and more like /a/.
That would be amazing, if the little board actually managed to breathe quality back into the big one. I don't believe it for a second, but it makes for a nice story.
>>
>>131875709
/v/ has been total shit for years now. It's not a case of forced board rivalry, /v/ is just genuinely garbage and the people who go there are cancer.

/v/ermin are so deep in the cancer they don't even realize how shitty their board is, they honestly still believe /a/ likes them.

It might seem funny to think about, but it's the truth. Over the last couple year, the crowd on /v/ that likes "weebshit" games has grown to match the crowd that doesn't, when they used to be a minority. They have drawthreads, waifuthreads, ronerythreads, visual novel discussions, and even outright anime threads sometimes.

So long as you ignore the contant Sm4sh and MGSV threads, the content isn't as bad as people say.

>>131876144
Yeah I do that from time to time.

>>
>>131876226
Post it on 4chan, save it immediately with the new filename.
Pretend to be somebody else using your OC.
Repeat.

There are certain threads where people are more likely to save reaction images than others. I haven't quite seen through the pattern yet, but ever since I started posting them where they might be more appreciated my images seem to have been more successful. Or so I tell myself.
>>
>>131876144
The only OC I ever made that got used was a shitty reaction image gimp crop of Judo from SYD. I haven't seen it in a few years now though.
>>
in the distant future, scholars will be studying the archives to study the social culture of our time.

I think that's really the saddest part of dying, that we can't have fun reading about future people misunderstanding us.

>>131876145
I very seriously doubt it. The very few tidbits I've seen from recent /v/ indicate it's just as shitty as it has been for the last 5 years. Full of off topic blogging, forced memes, youtube personality discussion, feminist whining, and cancerous shitposting.

At this point, calling terrible posters /v/ermin and telling them to fuck off back to /v/ feels as quaint as calling them /b/tards and telling them to fuck off back to /b/.
>>

>>
>>131876490
No, maybe it's too hard to understand for you.
The nominal topic (anime/manga vs video games) is not the important difference between /a/ and /v/.
What's important is the posting style, the way that people treat each other, the way the nominal topic is treated and stuff like that.
/a/ is good at this. /v/ is not.
>>
>>131876490
>>It means that /a/ and /v/'s userbase has a significant overlap
No it doesn't.
>People on /a/ to on /v/ to talk about video games
No they don't. I've been playing video games since I was 10, and I don't fucking talk about them on /v/ because /v/ is cancer. I do, however, visit /vg/ sometimes because of guides and mod info posted in relevant threads. That's as close as I get to visiting /v/ for video game "discussion".

If you seriously think everybody who posts about anime visits /a/ on this site you are gravely mistaken. Try visiting /wsg/ sometime, stop by the anime threads and see how many of them claim to hate /a/ and never come here.

The reason why discussion of /a/ related stuff is on the rise on /v/ is because with the increasing shift between the two boards /v/ermin can no longer comfortably discuss their favorite anime on /a/. They need to either lurk a bit (which they aren't used to at all) or talk about it on /v/ (which is easy because /v/ is off topic anyway).
/v/ discussing anime related stuff is proof that /v/ continues to fail.

I still stand by the opinion that more popular boards should have longer reply timers. This potentially -- and yes, only potentially -- will make people think harder about what to post, if they can only post every three minutes. It also gives the jans and mods more time to clean up the trash.

Pic obviously unrelated.

Actually, if we look at hachichan, we see that their /v/ is a lot bigger than /a/ and other boards barring /pol/ and /b/. /v/ crossboards a lot with /pol/, not with /a/.
We can't tell from that what board has the biggest crossboarding with /a/ but I would put my money on /sp/, if I had to, based on some poor evidence.

/pol/ really isn't anywhere near as big deal as some people imagine it to be.
Remember when moot got mad at that board, removed the post timer, put a bunch of wordfilters and told the entire site to raid it?
/pol/'s response to that was absolutely pathetic. They couldn't do shit for months.
From what I hear, they tried to retaliate by taking over /mlp/ and failed miserably, couldn't even beat a bunch of literal horsefuckers.

I don't think /pol/ should be deleted, but /pol/ is really a non-issue in the larger scheme of things. If it was deleted and if mods were told to be a bit more vigilant (like they were on /v/ for like a week after the /v/-/vg/ split), I'm absolutely certain 99% of /pol/luters would leave the site and never come back.

>I'd welcome their collective banishment from 4chan if such a thing were possible. 4chan needs a place to discuss video games, but /v/ isn't it.
/v/ is the best place to discuss video games on the internet, just like /a/ is the best place to discuss anime. The fact that the boards are shit is a result of the medium, not the boards. No matter what board discusses video games, it will always be shit.
>>

It has more to do with /pol/ being so shit that most of them didn't even care.

It's not about /pol/ "raiding" the site if they get screwed over anyway. It's that without a /pol/ containment board then /pol/ will naturally creep into every single board, most notoriously /b/ which would turn into the de-facto containment board, and god knows that's a combination that nobody wants on this site.

/v/ is shit for several reasons. Just to name a few:
>higher levels of normalfaggotry
>turned into a warzone for /pol/ and tumblr
>authenticity of the discussion compromised by the presence of actual paid shills
>furries and other undesirable elements
>groupthink fucking everywhere

The closest thing /a/ gets to /pol/ content is the latest "JAPAN/ANIME/LOLI IS DOOMED" scare article, the response to which is usually reasonable. The only actual problem with /a/ lately is the high levels of crossboarder activity (because of anime becoming trendy in the west), and psuedo-generals being held for ongoing shows. Unfortunately there's not much to do about either other than hoping anime fades back into irrelevancy in the west and faggots stop trying to turn anime into a fad.

So, should we have an official backup chan in case this hellhole goes down for good? If 4chan were to go for a couple months i think we could move enough of the userbase permanently to another chan and never have to deal with the other boards again.

This is a big reason.

When /v/ hit the bottom of the barrel, around 2010 - 2012, there were no good releases around.

On /a/, you get something to watch every season, while when it comes to video games there are occasionally long periods where nothing worthwhile is released, which naturally then drives the board into off-topic bullshit.

I disagree.

>it was originally made by woxxy
No it wasn't. Woxxy took over from Eksopl, who in turn took over from the original developer of the fuuka archiver engine. It went like this:

Chanarchive (2006-2013) --> The /a/rchive (2007) --> Easymodo (Eksopl, 2008) --> Green-Oval (2010) --> Back to Easymodo (2011) --> Foolz (Woxxy, late 2011) --> Archive.moe (various, 2014)

>>
>>131879691
If we're talking about the recent years, kickstarter has delivered quite a bit. Shadowrun: Dragonfall for example, Divinity: OS and right now I'm enjoying Unity of Command.

Also, I don't think I'll go "back" to /v/. Like most people who aren't newfags I've been browsing both /a/ and /v/ for nearly a decade.
>>
>>131879895
If there is a board other than /jp/ that could pull it off, it's /a/.
Besides, between all the ERP networks from the subtle circlejerks there is probably an anon network already, we could spread the word in the different notepads, project groups, etc.
With having 1/3 of the userbase of /a/ we could have a fully viable chan, we could avoid the mistake of making boards for normalfags, wait a while to see if the population becomes stable and maybe even add a /v/ and /b/ that are heavily moderated.

The onyl way of moving /a/ with the strongly fixed roots we have is knowing that there is a secondary /a/ everyone is "supposed" to go and then nuking 4chan ourselves for a while.
i wouldn't mind ddosing the shit out of 4chan for a month or two to put this into effect if one ever comes up, i've long considered /a/ to be the soul of the 4chan i grew up in anyway
>>
>>131879934

No, not really. It's a bizarre, out-of-nowhere reference that seems dated now, and will seem impossibly dated in a year or two. >How is the definition of "crossboarder" anything but "someone who browses multiple boards"?

Think about it rationally, dude.
Literally like 99.9998% of all posters on this site post anonymously. So the only way an anonymous poster stands out is by the content of their post. People aren't going to call you a crossboarder because they have installed a hidden camera in your room and know that just before you came to this thread you were posting in a trap thread on /r9k/. People are going to call you a crossboarder if your posts stand out and look like posts someone would make on one of the garbage boards.

If you post like an average /v/ermin, you will stand out and people will call you out for being a crossboarder. If you post like an average /m/anchild or an average /tg/enerate, your post will not look too out of place on /a/ so people won't complain about it. The same goes for admitting you crossboard - if you say you also go to a "harmless" board like, say, /an/ or whatever, no one is going to tell you to fuck off. If you admit you go to a more controversial board like, say, /pol/, quite a few people will react negatively towards you because of the reputation the board has.

The problem with "crossboarding" isn't that you're betraying /a/ by cheating on it and having fun on another board, the problem with crossboarding is when pollute /a/ with board culture, memes and/or posting mannerisms and behavior from a much more worse board.

This is basic common sense.
>>

I see your "pretending to be retarded" and raise it by playing shitty pasta:

Tbh implies you aren't honest all the time. It gives the listener the sense that you are shy, indifferent or compromising in your views and opinions.

Imo similarly is arbitrary and useless when used to express yourself. Everything you say is your opinion unless you clearly state otherwise; "People use to many acronyms imo" vs "I think people use to many acronyms". It's like you are trying to use the opinion of the masses and then claiming it as your own. It is arrogant to assume everyone agrees with you.

I don't use acronyms. I own my opinions and I'm not afraid if people want to disagree with them. You are weak if you appeal to an outside authority to make your points.
>>

For the details, you ought to go to either /qa/ or /d/. Suffice to say, the janitorial staff of /d/ have been cleaning up the /d/ board and are enforcing the rules of no western art again. Huge drama from those who like the western art, trying to justify by claiming that since it wasn't enforced back then, it should stay on /d/, and/or trying to prove that they're the majority making up the /d/ community.

The funny part is, the new /aco/ board also doesn't want the western /d/ art, so the fans of western /d/ art have nowhere to go except /b/, which they refuse to go to, because they fear that their threads will be Spidermeme'd to death.

Have those /aco/ people stopped bitching about /d/ porn being too gross for them? I was glad that a containment board for shitty western art was finally made and how /d/ was finally going to be free from that, but then unsurprisingly enough everyone decided to be a faggot who can't tolerate each other's tastes.

How is this thread not dead yet
>>
>>131884482
Best news I got today.
>>
>>131884497
Neither /d/ nor /aco/ wants the western deviantart stuff.

This should tell you how much they are hated by both sides.
>>
>>131884497
Is /aco/ even active enough to put up a fight? I don't expect much from this board.
>>
>>131884497
Nope, are still threads right now on /qa/ bitching about it.
>>
>>131884443
Time he could spend city planning better.

I like lelouch despite his profound stupidity, he's been around so long he's part of the board.

Anyway, i'll take my leave here, it calms me to know years have passed and we still have the same autistic discussions that won't change shit. Probably the same people too, see you in a month everyone.

Who the fuck even goes to porn boards anymore? Why do they even still exist in 2015?

/u/ is an exception. since it's not just an image dump board but transitioned into a discussion board as well.

But why would you go to /h/ or /d/ or /y/ for porn when you have sadpanda and whatever else? What can you possibly find there that you couldn't find (much more easily) elsewhere?
>>
>>131884497
Nope, they are still at it.
>>
>>131884558
Pure willpower.
>>131884571
That's good to know. Hopefully an /acod/ won't be created either so they'll be forced to leave and everything will be okay once again.
>>
>>131884497
That's actually hilarious.
>>
>>131884558
Is on page 10 with about 5 more threads to go.

People sharing your fetishes.
>>
>>131884497
I wish the mods start deleting western shit on /u/
>>
>>131884600
Fuck you cunt, this year is the year I break free.
>>
>>131884612
/d/ actually has discussion in it's generals, but it is the blog type of people discussing things they did and want to do.
>>
>>131884612
Because sadpanda is for finding something specific, the porn boards are for finding something new.
>>
>>131884655
I'm tempted to bump a few of them to be able to see this thread die before I go to sleep, but I don't want to start ripples that might disturb the fabric of /a/.
>>
>>131884612
>/u/ is an exception. since it's not just an image dump board but transitioned into a discussion board as well.
Last time I went to /u/ it was pretty shit with a mentality of "anything goes" as long as lesbians are involved.

I've seen a few posts in this thread get deleted so there's either a janny around but no mods, or the mods are leaving the thread be since it's relatively harmless and they don't mind letting you nerds vent and have these meta discussions every once in a while.

I'm building my interactive arcade as a stepping stone to a commerce center, and then a city. So don't tell me what I should be working on.

Fyi, nerd.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
