I liked it a lot it was fun to watch and the premise was interesting.

Maybe.
>>
I guess they kinda tried to pay homage to Go Nagai but also to make fun of him, but in the end they did neither, they just made a regular action/magical girl anime with millenial designs.

Whatever.
>>
>>124086073
The wild faces and copius blood weren't an homage?

This show, in Japan, it is consider masterpiece.
>>
>>124085976
Pretty good and fun to watch
>>
I don't even remember what it was about.
>>
The idea was original and great. You can see if there was more budget (and may be more episodes) it would have become one of the best anime out there. The rare animation is glorious and even the economical animation is comical and makes the viewer ask for more. Really, trigger is the proud successor of gainax and they will probably do great things the day they'll have more budget than inferno cop's one.
>>
It was a really fun show to watch with /a/ and it's fun watching it with /co/ ,just not as hype though.

KLK is a great anime. Watch it if you like fun and having a good time.

So by /a/ standards it was shit.

Utter shit, like seriously. The story was uncreative and repitive, the power levels entirely inconsistent, the developement completely predictable, the characters plain and the gags lame. Also even though it was an action anime the animation was only average which is simply not enough.

Kill la kill as an anime suffers from something I find that a lot of such shows suffer from. That being a very steep rising action, as it were. The story almost completely changes its tone halfway through in such a way that I find myself asking if they were just winging it the whole time.
I liken it to a lot of shonen/shonen-esque anime. Such as Dragonball, Naruto, Gurren Lagaann that as a side effect of wanting to constantly raise the stakes and top themselves things become increasingly absurd and eventually feel like completely different series all together.
Now this isn't always inherently bad as some shows can pull this off well. But my aprehension with KLK comes from the fact that unlike some of the others it's just a much shorter anime. Even Gurren Lagann, which has the same amount of episodes feels more seperated due to the time skip that happens between parts that segments this issue.
The 2nd half of KLK introduces so much stuff and basically completely switches gears from the 1st half that it makes the two parts seem like two different animes.
That's the gist of where a majority of my complaints would be.

This anime has honestly changed my life.

I went into it not expecting much, considering that was hyped to shit. Holy fucking shit, was I blown away. I was hooked, like a baby to a tit with creamy foamy milk. I could feel the energy and hype flowing through my body, bringing light to my dull life. I resonated with Ryuuko. I could feel his struggle and his desire to surpass her limitations, something that struck me hard. Everything suddenly stopped when I heard the words:

DON'T LOSE YOUR WAY!

and I started trembling. That was me, I feel like I've been "Losing my way" these past years. I haven't been able to hold a steady job, my grades were starting to slip, and my parents suspect that I'm gay. It was right then and there that I knew that I had to get my shit together. I can't think of any other anime that has had such a profound effect on me, let alone on the first episode. Tomorrow, I'm going to be a better man. Thank you, Kill la Kill, thank you Trigger.

I'll never lose my way.

I'm rewatching KLK and one thing I really like is how the effect certain characters have on the rest of the cast is portrayed in an outlandish, exaggerated sort of way for dramatic effect rather than the usual comedic one.

Also, Nui was the best villain you hate to love. She should have been the final boss instead of twitchy fingers Ragyou.

Imagine watching a commercial for a new roller coaster ride, the one to beat them all. You go to six flags the next day, waiting in line. Your hype grows more and more for each minute. You get on the ride, and the cart is scaling up the gigantic ramp, and the the cart goes down, and you're feeling it. After that first downhill, comes another and you noticed it's pretty much the same, and so your hype gets lower and lower until the ride is over.

>Nakashima: It’s still changing here and there.
>Imashi: And that makes it vastly different from TTGL. TTGL didn’t change very much from the first planned structure. But KLK is going beyond that.
>Nakashima: With KLK, the whole staff (with me included) submit ideas, like “Hey, this would be cool”, and the series’ layout keeps changing. It’s really a live production. If anything, it’s quite similar to the experience I had when I was producing weekly manga. With weekly manga, you keep developing/making things in the direction the characters are moving, so it’s really fun. KLK gave me that vibe.

I don't think I can put into words how much I love it, what it means to me, at least not very concisely and eloquently.

Very few fictional things provoke strong emotions in me, but this show took me on a tour of the entire emotional spectrum; sadness, rage, jubilation, confusion, even childlike glee.

That's probably because the characters were the strongest aspect, they made you care about everybody, even the bad guys (well, the initial bad guys, not the true bad guys that were expressly designed to make you hate them, and that's still not a bad thing because it certainly succeeded.) And of course the voice actors sealed the deal with their delivery.

The Ride was certainly great, but even re-watching it (which I've done twice) is still fantastic.
>>
Should have been even edgier.

I wanted Satsuki to be a real meanie when I saw the promo art. Characters should have lived and died from one episode to the next, the sole purpose to remove her from power.

A total snoozefest where nothing mattered because there were no rules and no consequences for anything, and no sense of dramatic buildup to give anything any kind of point at all. Horrible animation and washed of colours like every other digital anime despite the animation team working on it. Had one of the most poorly used soundtracks I have ever seen in the medium. The writer had to explain characterisation in out-of-show interviews because he failed so badly at conveying it in the show, despite it being a character drama.

Anyone who rates it higher than a 6/10 is kidding themselves.
>>
>>124092331
>well, the initial bad guys, not the true bad guys that were expressly designed to make you hate them, and that's still not a bad thing because it certainly succeeded

I don't really disagree with you but making hateable villains is not difficult. Raygo and Nui are just crazy evil aliens, wholly without nuance or intrigue.
>>
I feel like Trigger was overambitious when starting out and ended up cutting out a lot of things which really became apparent late in the show.
>>
>>124092541
Ragyou's daughter molesting was pretty intriguing.
>>
>>124092541
The child molestation angle could have had added more nuance had it clearly not just been an excuse for fanservice
>>
>>124085976
The second half didn't make much sense, and trigger tried to cover it up by saying it was meant to be nonsensical, but that was a bad move. They should have spent more time hashing out the story so it was coherent.

I still had fun watching the show and discussing it with /a/.

Could be better, but not awful. 6-7/10
>>
>>124092342
anime isn't allowed to have human villains because someone wrote something once about having total sympathetic motives and this was a big bombshell in japan so now they have to have aliens to have any villain at all
>>
>>124085976

>>
>>124091683

To understand the formula of any delinquent story we need to understand the point of any delinquent story. Usually a delinquent story is about youthful rebellion. What do young people rebel against? They rebel against adults or more precisely the system that those adults created. Who are the ultimate bad guys? Adults. Who are the ultimate bad guys in KLK? Aliens. I guess Ragyo is an evil adult but she was brainwashed by literal space aliens. And those aliens they don't stand for the system. Academy in Utena stands for the system, NERV and SEELE stand for the system, even Anti-Spirals stand for the system, hence ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWER, but aliens in KLK are just aliens. And Ryuuko must stop them because humans are incomprehensible.
>>
Strategic, rather than tactical failure.

The more I read comments from the staff, the more it's apparent this never had a chance to be good from the storyboards on.

I like you. You're a good person.

You could argue that the Life Fibers are essentially the "parents" of humanity by crafting them into a particular form to ultimately be consumed.

That said, I think the problem is that the Life Fibers really don't seem to have a will of their own. Ragyo is supposedly brainwashed by them but nothing really seems to support that outside of exposition. The Fibers bend constantly to her will but she still claims to be serving them. It's a bit contradictory.

Nui went beyond just being a hateable villain, she didn't even look like she belonged in the show, she looked more like a Precure character or something like that, from the very first moment she appeared on screen, before she even did anything horrendous, it was clear something was very, very wrong.

She came out of literally nowhere and ruined everything that was currently going on in one fell swoop: Sanageyama having redeemed himself and beaten Ryuko senseless and now finally getting to finish that fight? Gone, and he and his fans would be subjected to constant ridicule from then on. Ryuko's climb through the Elite Four to finally get some answers from Satsuki? Well, she got those answers, but she didn't like them, oh boy did she not like them, and neither did I.

In general I dislike when "kawaii uguu" little girl characters are competent or even superior fighters, so Ryuko being unable to even touch this frilly bitch that's standing perfectly still save for blocking attacks with her own scissor really ticked me off.

And it only got worse from there.

Who said anything about being confused? Nakashima had to make up characterisation that wasn't in the show because he forgot to actually write it into the story. This isn't difficult to understand and it should be obvious why it's a mark against the show. Don't debate me until you grow a brain.

Same feeling here. I think it was intentional.

I believe Nui was supposed to represent the over-saturation of the moe~ genre not only overtaking the anime market from "cool" shows of the past, but also being a cancer upon the medium as well. To the point where the industry was wholly RELIANT on cancer to exist, and would eventually destroy itself.

I for one am glad the moe boom is over, and the industry crashed and burned a little bit.

Not only do I highly doubt that this has any merit or was ever intended, but even if it was, fucking up your own show for the sake of such an obtuse and pointless message really, really isn't worth it. Hell, I don't think any message is worth ruining a show for.

The directing was excellent. Trigger basically made an art-form out of animating battle scenes with no budget. There are multiple anime that had BETTER budget yet still couldn't make their battles exciting (most of the fights in HunterxHunter for example). Soundtrack too was godly. The writing fell apart at the end but that's not very important in an action show.

Anyone who complains about a few tit ass shots or some of the goofier ideas probably hates anime. RE: Cutie Honey was even more lewd and had even more ridiculous ideas and came out more than a decade ago. It even had the same ultra fast pacing and color scheme.

I didn't stop giggling the rest of they day when this happened; the moment of pause, the sound effect when they came off, her face, her screams of not just rage, but absolute shock and bewilderment, unable to believe what just happen to her, everything was perfect.

Excellent patchwork show with homages and references to things you'd never expect and some fantastic character development
However, it is a parody first and foremost and a very ham-fisted one at that, and the clothing-centric themes kind of wear thin in the middle stretch of the show

The generic tournament arc with its one good episode (the Satsuki versus Ryuuko fight which is ultimately, just like Berserketsu, never relevant afterwards) and overall lack of effective parody elements seen in earlier episodes (such as Ryuuko's "training arc" which takes only half an episode and isn't even the focus of it) brings the show down and the subsequent QUALITY of the immediately following episodes made the show hard to watch on a week-to-week basis

Harime Nui and Ragyo are both potentially competent villains but the series doesn't really build them up into anything but a gaggle of lesbian psychopaths with a fetish for oppression and oppressive clothing, with only a sliver of a hint of motive provided for the latter in the OVA episode (which is much, much more of a final episode than the generic space battle finale)

I'm really hoping Trigger announces TTGL-style compilation movies, the series could desperately use them

Nui was unintentionally terrible, I don't think you realise how hard she bombed as a concept. The pathetic backpeddling of the scriptwriter on twitter and NewType as he tried to force some kind of depth and personality onto her is proof of how poorly conceived she was. She's the worst written character in a show where every character is atrociously written.
>>
>>124093773
Agreed, I'm definitely overstating her negative effect. It just kills much of the dramatic pacing that had been built up over the previous episodes.

You're an idiot. You clearly think that what you watched on Toonami is representative of "anime's past". Nui was a villain, she was meant to be entertaining, unpredictable, and super cute.

She doesn't "represent the state of the industry" anymore than that ginger-haired jew is supposed to represent the struggling middle class in a socio-economic bullshit paradigm.

"Moe" has always been a part of the industry. Look at Dream Hunter Rem or literally any magical girl show ever made. Magical girl shows are awesome.

The reason we don't have "cool action shows" like Guyver or Fist of the North Star anymore is because Otaku are self-conscious and don't want to watch an action show about "Hunks who beat up other hunks". Their action star needs to be a scrawny high-school kid with a magical katana or some overly complex rule set for magic that sounds like a bad jrpg. No blood or death allowed either. Boring.
>>
It would have been pretty good if they had cut the early filler episodes and the entire war subplot.

I felt like they ended up in space because it needed to be like TTGL, despite not making any fucking sense.

The final fight was a letdown as well.
>>
>>124093831
Berserker is relevant because that's what Ryuko's afraid she really is, even before she knew she was a hybrid she tells Senketsu she's afraid of herself and of hurting him again, and that she was aware it was all her who was going berserk. That segways into her existential crisis in the tail end of the show.

Ragyo and Nui are meant to be puppets themselves, Nui a puppet of a puppet but even Ragyo is just a slave to OLF.

The final fight ended up in space because there's a major star motif going on in the show. The life fibers are stars, Ryuko is a shooting star, Senketsu is the red Sirius, Satsuki shines pretending to be a star, Ragyo dreams of going to the stars, stars are tears, etc.

The final fight was garbage, but then again there weren't many decent "fights" in the show at all.
>>
>>124094158
It's relevant to Ryuuko but no one else whatsoever, and the lack of inner monologue really hurts the connection between that event and her escapades with Junketsu

Also the NUCLEAR Ragyo in the OVA episode hints that she did have some reason for bending to the OLF's will, as well as manipulating others to follow her; it would've been great to see her have an actual spiel on why the human race deserved to be subjugated rather than just MUH LIFE FIBERS, SO SUPERIOR, and Nui similarly was shown to have emotional issues and could have easily been better fleshed out or played with more thematic depth than intentional obnoxiousness

I get that Trigger and Gainax have done a lot of self-referential shit in the past but that doesn't mean everything they do is incredibly meta. Nui is an infuriating character because Trigger had no idea what they were doing, not because of some post-ironic attempt to make the viewer mad.

Were they, really? I think it was pretty clear who could beat who at any time, and you could always tell when a characters' power level increased (if anything, it was kinda shoved in the viewers face, intentionally obviously).

The only thing that felt out of place, power-wise, was Ryuko somehow managing to power out of Junketsu despite the fact that is was sown directly into her and it was physically impossible to remove (although that might have been Nui lying in order to make everyone lose hope).

This ain't some neverending Jump series where the MC grapples with their anger issues for 200 episodes, culminating in a battle with a physical manifestation of the darkness inside them.

She realized after Nui destroyed Senketsu that she can't mope around like that forever, she's gotta get shit done! At the very least she was able to keep it under control, until she found out she wasn't human and was nothing but a weapon in the eyes of her father, that was enough to bring it boiling back to the surface.

Now that I think about it, I think she rejected and insulted Senketsu when she woke up because she was afraid they'd become that monster again if she put him on.

Apparently the phrase "wearing him on the inside" wasn't just something to help her feel better.

When he and Mako went inside her, the inner Ryuko took off that wedding dress and put on Senketsu, so she's literally always wearing him on the inside. She was able to rip off the Kamui she was currently supposed to be permanently wearing on the outside and survive because she had another one inside.

Even when his physical body was destroyed, the inner Ryuko was still wearing the inner Senketsu, so she still heard his voice and saw his singed ghost in her hour of need. He even summoned the scissors from space for her.

If the series were to continue, I imagine Ryuko would start to plumb the depths of her Life Fiber powers, learning how to shapeshift into Senjin, Shippu, and whatever other forms she can think of on her own.

If you want to get the full experience of Kill la Kill, there are obligatory shows you need to see.

Gunbuster and Diebuster, of course, Ashita no Joe, Aim for the Ace!, Mazinger, Devilman, Votoms, Honoo no Tenkousei. Cutie Honey. and many others.
