The show would have been so much better with any other kind of love interest, she was such a bitch filled with bad qualities and the show kept trying to make me care for her, which it never accomplished. She was, but she wasn't one herself, at least to me. I mean, whenever she actually showed up, I was fine with her. The issue was that most of the show was just other (more annoying) characters thinking about her.

If I had to choose between those same three leads doing stuff without Kaori, or three different characters coping with Kaori's fatal illness, I'd take the latter.
