Being wet for an extended period of time has the ability to make your body temperature lower thus fucking up your body or something. A lot of Asian countries are obsessed with health, that's why we see Chinese/Japanese/etc. wearing masks whenever they're sick so much. In addition the work culture in Japan is intense; Taking a day off is heavily frowned upon so it makes sense that they want to avoid getting sick as much as possible.

Then again it could just be another shitty anime trope, who knows?
