Me personally I think any character that resorts to violence is a sign of a lazy writer. I think All problems within fiction should be caused and solved via verbal communication instead of primitive savage fist bludgeoning porn.

That sounds dull as fuck. There isn't a dichotomy between dialogue and violence when it comes to conflict or resolution. There are plenty of other interesting options that can be much more nuanced than either. And yes, rape as backstory is often a shortcut to get your audience to empathise with a character. They'd introduce some oddity or defect in a character and have people wondering why that is, and then it's revealed that they got raped. And that's the end of it. I hope you feel sorry now. That's some zero effort formulaic narrative that demonstrates no creative exertion on the part of the author. Not that this is always the case with rape, but it often times is and it's clearly those instances that are being complained about here.

literally the only assassin manga/anime I've ever cared about is Golgo 13 because it keeps things simple

It violates bodily autonomy. Basic thing we all take for granted is that we have control over our bodies and what goes into them. Having your bodily autonomy fucked with is something that fucks people up.

There's other ways it can be violated, but rape is the most common and well known. Another example is the force-feeding of inmates at Guantanamo who are on hunger strikes. It's about as bad as rape.

The inmates did it to themselves. They choose to suffer by themselves. Why the guards choose to feed them instead of letting them die is beyond my comprehension.

When you're pushing the edge of sex and violence, I think its a granted that rape is going to come along at some point. You could easily say 'but that isn't good manga!' but manga is a medium that relies on shock on every page.
If anything it not being more common is strange.
