I agree it did its job well, it had clear themes, but it took a lot of time to explore them and of course some people see it as a borefest.
For me it was like that in the beginning but after the first mystery, when characters became clearer and got interesting, I stopped losing attention. It's still appraised as deep though and even called a masterpiece, sometimes I can't even tell if these people are reverse trolling or just plain stupid.

It handles some very anti-japanese themes well and at the very least i would say it's brave in that regard. I think it's an 8/10 personally and its one of the only shows i felt compelled to do that for in years but it is by no means a masterpiece or flawless(ie the forced reveal of the saboteur at the end of the school festival) but it had very strong characters that i feel reached much farther than simply their designs or initial impressions. This is more than i can say for a lot of things that have aired in the past few years.

I guess im a bit biased at this point but i mostly feel like people feel it was pretentious or presumptuous near it's end because they did not understand the significance of the final moments of the show.they merely see the filter and misinterpret the intentions and feel as if something has been forced onto them very harshly without taking the time to analyze it they simply feel as though a melodrama has jumped the gun of taking itself too seriously.

There was no good characters in evol, just ones that weren't as shit. And Hyouka isn't a 'passion-project'; It's the same shit as Chuu2, as Free, as KnK - they take popular source material and buff it up until it's all sparkling without adding any pizzaz or consideration to it. Their product is generic and lifeless, cookie-cut.

Do a scene-by-scene mashup of some recent KyoAni shows and show them to someone who hasn't watched them - same drawing style, same atmosphere, similar settings - I bet you they won't realise they're watching different anime.

KyoAni doesn't do shows anymore unless they fit very specific criteria. When you no longer challenge yourself is when you've moved away from art into the realm of repetition. You're baking twinkies, practically identical, one after another. You can't call yourself a 'studio' when you've stooped to the level of a factory. They're riding the gravy train.

KyoAni lately is like watching AAA Blockbusters.

Hyouka was never pretentious. It's more it comes from a novel and while reading it is one thing, animating it was another. It hardly introduces otaku pandering, or a character talking about waifus, anime, manga, etc.
So, it was never aimed to youngsters, or at least it's not the main demographic. When it was adapted I could think why. Maybe an action live, but not an anime.

Hyouka is not popular with any demographic that would have any interest in anime it is based on a novel not a light novel and even moreso it was finished by the time the anime began production.

Nichijou was far too surreal and lacked any lasting "moe" traits for it;s characters for them to be latched on to(ie k-on) as a result it sold less than considerably well. Both these shows were obviously done without the pretense of selling or pandering by my definition that s a passion project. Whether or not we agree to them being good is subjective.

Their more recent anime as well i would argue were done without much pretense for money making Free! pandered for sure but even then i'd say it only meant to do so to a small market

Boundary,Tamako,Chuni and Amagi i'll give you as they definitely do all look similar but Boundary even so i would say was a definite financial gamble as it had no tangible concepts for anyone to really dig in to.
