Even the graphics looks way less better than before, Gunnm was probably at its top at the end of the first season and at the start of the second season. Sexy as fuck Gally never again, even her young self was way cuter in LO.

The reason he ended the original alita so fast was that his wife died in a car crash and he wanted to end the series as fast as possible.
That's why there was such a huge hiatus between the original alita and aqua knight (which was part of his therapy to get over the depression he had at the time) and that's why last order was so hit and miss when it came to hitting the dark tones. The death of his wife fucked him up.

I mean, in LO, I can see Kishiro tried hard to makes detailed explanations and characters, but it just DOESN'T WORKS.
We still don't give a shit about the opponents. The fights are way too long and doesn't add anything to the story. The pacing is disatrous when compared to the first season that dealt so well with the many arcs for only 9 volumes. We got :

Also, I am the only one that still liked the epilogue of the original serie ? It was fast but still a great ending for the story, reminding me a bit of Laputa, and the drawings were at their top.

Considering the start of LO was pretty great and developed enough Zalem that got rushed in the first serie, combining it to the original epilogue would easily have made the story perfect. LO had its moments (flashback of Gally's story, the vampires) and good characters (Sechs, M'bady), but the art and tournament were such a clusterfuck it killed most of it. I'm happy to not have disocvered the serie too soon, because following the whole LO chapters by chapters would have been one hell of a terrible experience.

Somehow, I expected Kishiro would try to go back to Gunnm's level of quality, be it for the art and story, for Mars chronicles. Result ? For now, it's even worse than fucking LO who had at least a good start. The first chapter with Nova and his disciple along with gally coming back to life in a destroyed Zalem were neat as fuck and totally were in the mood of the original.

Didn't the fucking manga title come from the bloody vampire arc and end up being fucking nothing for the manga ending?

Chances are that the RE dude and kishiro kicked some ideas around and were a good team. When miura changed assistants berserk went down the shitter too.
Those creative processes are always influenced by all kinds of stuff.
The Ido arc of last order was GOLD, everyone just likes to forget about that.
That was some classic alita tier amazing shit right there.
The battle tournament arc ruined last order and the vampire flashback was really good, but out of place.
But the manga wasn't technically bad. The flow of reading that tournament was just shit.
When you re-read the whole thing it's a lot less grating than waiting for months to have another dumb chapter full of people shouting their attacks in a comical shonen fashion.
It's just insane that he spent more time on last order than on the original alita and managed to make something that is less memorable than the first volume of alita.

I got both volumes sitting in my shelf you pleb.
It's super clean and really looks a lot like mars chronicles.
The difference is that mars chronicles uses almost no screentones or shading in general.
The art is fine and the story is interesting.
There were good parts in LO too and I'm willing to give kishiro the benefit of doubt. Maybe the change in publisher will allow him to make an interesting manga again.

The co-writer was 19 at the time and his assistant.
And kishiro HAD some event that stopped him from writing alita in the mid 90s happen to him.
BBS speculation was that a car crash killed his wife.
Kishiro doesn't really go into detail but he mentioned "an event" and the crippling depression that forced him to end Alita in several interviews and that he had years of therapy until he picked up a pen again and started to write Aqua Knight to get the depression out his system.
That's all facts.

Depression can change a person, mental illness can change a person.

If you look at mangaka there's quite a few that completely stopped what they were doing due to depression or traumatic events.
Masamune Shirow went completely batshit after the kobe earthquake destroyed his home.
The guy who does Bastard!! had a nervous breakdown and needed loads of therapy and sporadically releases new works every 5 years or so.
Mangaka is a very stressfull job and some people are fucked up from it.
Akira Toriyama never touched a pen again, except for a few one-shots after DB.
