This doesn't look that great. It uses camera tracking and blurs to disguise the low framerate.

Your post is worded poorly, but I agree that it doesn't look very good. The problem is, as you point out, all the post-processing effects. It's distracting to me, but it's not hiding any sort of poor animation. It is detracting from the good stuff that's there though, making a weird mix of styles that I find gross overall. Would've been 100 times better to actually draw smoke plumes and such instead of all the shitty cg stuff.

>>122468061
This too. Fuck this shit.
>>
>>122468093
It looks amazing. That was actually a webm I made from the PV video off of Nico, there's a reason they chose that scene to hype the show. The intensity of that exchange, and the smoothness of the animation.

>>122468110
>4 second exchange with around 15 parries, every single one animated and can be tracked with the naked eye at normal speed despite happening in a few seconds.

That's top tier animation for a TV show.

Fight choreography in animation pales in comparison to live-action. I doesn't help that very few animators are good at pulling off a well-choreographed scene. Most of the time it's just some wild, flashy swings between the duelists.

>>
>>122468383
It looks cool. It's visually impressive. That's what counts in anime, and also in TV and film. Choreography is always made to be showy rather than realistic, because most of the audience doesn't know the difference anyway and if it looks cool nobody will care if it's unrealistic. Except one or two autists, I guess.

Besides, they aren't human. They're magic ghost versions of legendary superhuman heroes, who are you to say how they should fight?
>>
>>122468507
My point exactly. Most of the time, it's just a series of flashy attacks. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a fact that good choreography is hard to find in animation.

Moving at inhuman speed with inhuman precision. I wonder if you even registered that. This is one thing Ufotable did absolutely perfect: they captured the inhuman strength and speed of Servants, and made their clashes look properly intense. When you see this part right here, you realize no human being could beat either of them in a straight up fight.

All the lighting effects are the thing that makes it look bad to me. The actual animation, the stuff people are actually animating, looks fine, great even at times. But all the stupid shit the tossed on top of that is really killing it for me. I almost feel like they just got told they needed to pay a CG animator so they keep giving him shit to do even though it's completely unnecessary. Most of the post-processing effects in this have detracted from, rather than augmented, the the quality I'd say. Sure, that's like just my opinion man, but god damn does it irk me to see shit like this. It's like someone baking a perfect cake, crafting some beautiful frosting art, and then pouring syrup on top, because syrup is sweet so it goes on cakes right? All the blurs, all the lighting effects, the dust plumes, the occasional blurry fsat moving backgrounds, etc. That shit sucks. Fuck whoever decided to do that shit.

Confirmed not knowing the source material. Let me go through Saber vs Lancer so you can get it: in the opening skirmish, she strikes at lancer to get a feel for his power, and decides to rush him when she figures he's not that tough. But Lancer maintains distance while testing the length of her weapon with his spear. Saber fights using high level instinct, meaning she often attacks faster than she thinks, operating on pure intuition for where to hit, but Lancer is so fast and so skillful that even when her weapon is invisible he is able to deflect every single strike and with that exchange alone is able to figure out the reach of her sword. Satisfied with that, he decides to go on the offensive and lunges at her, but she evades and counters unexpectedly fast and with far more power than he expected, throwing him off balance. For Saber's part, she realized after the initial exchange that Lancer was too fast to simply overwhelm and she would have to wait for an opening to make her decisive strike, but Lancer proves to be a lot more durable than she expected, withstanding her flourishing strike after her counter.

This fight was Saber trying to defeat her opponent as quickly as possible, discovering he wouldn't go down that easily so she had to work out a strategy, and Lancer getting a little too excited in his duel that was supposed to be a recon mission, which is why he busted out Gae Bolg after seeing how strong Saber was.

Digital effects and post-processing are kind of Ufo's gimmicks as a studio. Their whole style of blending actual 2d animation with computer generated effects is what makes them unique,

Yes, it doesn't always look good, but they'll overuse the fuck out of it anyways because it's their niche in the market.

But that's exactly how his body moves. He's got a "snake-like" fighting style where his body moves unnaturally and seems to slither and stretch as he fights. It's so weird and unintuitive that he even manages to surprise Saber, though it only works once.

How does that correlate with the choreography? Saber doesn't need to spin and Lancer doesn't need to dance.

>1 spin
>1 staggering to find footing
Wow so much wasted movement! And in a fight scene that lasts maybe 6 minutes total, where every single attack and counter attack is planned and makes sense with regards to the characters' motivations. The spins and the fancy footwork are Ufotable flourishes that add more kinetic energy to the scene. They are animated nicely and don't really drag the scene out at all, so it's hardly "wasted" movement.

Like I said, it's an Ufotable flourish. They like having characters gear up for big charges. If I recall, they had Saber do something similar later during the fight at the school.

>>122470642
And I can break down every single canon fight and explain every single movement, sans whatever flourishes Ufotable put on top to make it more visually interesting. Which is only a couple per fight, if that.

It's really simple to do because the VN actually narrates all the fights and explains it for you, my explanation earlier was just a paraphrased version of several paragraphs from the VN.
>>
>>122470350
A spear thrust, especially in the hollywood style lancer is using, is telegraphed primarily by your stance and footing. He was trying to find an 'in' against saber's defense after brute force thrustspam failed by attempting to mask his attack under elaborate footwork. He was wasting movements, but that waste was a deliberate attempt to mislead his opponent, adding in unnecessary movements to disguise the necessary ones.

The spin hardly needs to be explained. She had her opponent on the defensive, and with his superhuman agility he jumped backwards a large distance. Rather than giving chase by running after him, she used her own superhuman agility to leap after him, and gave some spin to her leap so that she could shift the forward momentum of her gap-closing movement into the downward force of a top-down slash, with the intent of pressing her advantage not by bypassing her opponents guard, but by applying so much force to it when his stance was broken as he was off-balance, that it would create an opening for a decisive strike.

I mean, it's all hollywood and anime physics, but at least there's some sense to it.
>>
>>122470215
>if it looks bad, it must be an in-between
Not really, but a lot of examples posted are and other are mostly hardly noticeable like here >>122470464, not to say there aren't exceptions though, mostly coming from the last battle.

>if it looks good it's a keyframe and a flawless work of art
No one said it's flawless.

>if it looks stupid, it's okay because it's just being faithful to the VN
I agree some things look dumb (lancer zig-zag run and other things) but there's no right choice here, you either will shit on Ufo for not being faithful or looking stupid.

>ufotable is beyond criticism because they have lots of flashing lights.
I think they do use too much flash in their fights and the show is not closed for criticism (mostly the noses on some characters designs), but trying to compare to DEEN is just silly.
>>
>>122470772
As good an explanation as any. I'd like to think Ufotable put some thought into it, but a part of me just suspects they did it to look cool for the most part. And they succeeded.

But one thing, the flurry of spear on sword earlier was actually Lancer being defensive, trying to figure out Saber's reach since her sword was invisible. Saber was the one who initiated that exchange to try and overwhelm Lancer, and his lightning quick and precise parrying impressed her a lot.
>>
>>122470551

I'm really happy about all the rinxshirou art we have now, it was basically non-existent before
>>
>>122470772
I can accept the fucking unnecessary zig zagging explanation eventhough it's stupid but the spinning one still make no sense. It actually makes you more vulnerable to any counter attack and makes your moves more telegraphed.

>>
>>122470730

>>
>>122470916
Spinning is cool though.
>>
>>122470916
She jumps with her right foot and spins in the air to turn the jump into a slash, it's retarded as fuck buy Hollywod-style fighting seems to love dem spins
>>
>>122471054
It doesn't look stupid at all though, it looks amazing. The fast, fluid animation makes the exchanges look exactly as intense as they are supposed to be, gives every attack a proper amount of impact. You have strikes that destroy terrain, movements that create vacuums in the air, and twisting, eye-wrenching movements. If nothing else, Ufotable succeeded wonderfully at capturing the way Servants fight.
>>
>>122470916
If you remember in that scene, the spin was following up the exchange where lander attacked and was parried hard. His stance was broken and he was thrown off-balance by Saber unexpectedly swatting his weapon into the air. To avoid getting killed, he leaped backwards out of desperation. It would probably be more accurate to say that he threw himself backwards.

Saber gave chase by leaping after him with her little spin and landed her blow less than a fraction of a moment after Lancer landed.

She didn't give Lancer an opportunity to regain his balance or properly resume a defensive stance, he simply threw his weapon between her and him and tried his best to not die.
There was no reason for Saber to fear a counterattack while she was chasing because Lancer was not in a position where a counterattack would be possible. She didn't need to worry about masking her attack or making it less obvious because her goal wasn't to circumvent Lancer's guard. Lancer ws nt in a position to attack or to escape, so his only option was to guard the incoming attack with less-than-ideal footing. Knowing this, Saber just threw all of her weight and strength into her attack, exploiting the fact that Lancer's footing would not all him to absorb the force properly and would throw him off balance, hopefully breaking through his guard entirely.

The point behind the spin was to take the huge amount of force behind that leap, and use it to increase the force of her attack. It looks silly, but in a universe where people hardly 5ft tall can leap forward at the speed of sound, rotating is actually the best way to shift the force behind that leap into a sword swing.
>>
>>122471238
She could do that or she could just leap forward and attack him normally and not spin thus showing him the exact place that you are going to hit him.
But I guess spinning is cooler for some people.
>>
>>122471331
>she could just leap forward and attack him normally
She's not a normal person though. A normal person couldn't fight the way she fights. What, are you going to come down on her for being able to move so unnaturally fast and destroy the ground just by swinging her sword upward really fast?
>>
>>122471365
It doesn't matter if you're a normal person or not. Spinning do show where your attack is going to land and thus making Lancer know where exactly to put all of his energy guarding.
>>
>>122471331
If you want to to be strictly realistic jump slashes are retarded and needlessly telegraphed and exposing too, and 9 out of 10 times the look lazy and crappy, ufotable decided to ad their own spin (heh) to the good old jump slash and combined it with a spin attack for maximum cool.
>>
>>122471469
>put all of his energy guarding.
That's exactly what she wanted him to do, though.
>>
>>122471469
>thus making Lancer know where exactly to put all of his energy guarding.
Well no shit, she was trying to overwhelm him to keep him on the defensive.
>>
>>122471469
Again: she's not a normal person. Her strength is far, far above a normal person. With her level of strength, and with what Lancer had demonstrated thus far, she thought she might be able to break through his guard with brute force, but he was tougher than expected. Against a lesser servant, she might have cleaved him in two.

In case you hadn't noticed, the theme of that fight was them underestimating each other and testing the waters. Saber was trying to defeat him or else drive him off, to protect Shirou, but she couldn't risk committing all her strength to a fight when there were other enemies to face later. The energy Servants use to fight is the same energy that sustains them, and wasting it on a single opponent that early in the war is foolish. This turns out to be doubly true in Saber's case since Shirou can't replenish her mana normally, since he is an improper magus.

At any rate, Lancer was just stronger than she was expecting, and she is reluctant to commit more of her power than necessary to any fight.

>In case you hadn't noticed, the theme of that fight was them underestimating each other
What?
Exactly how did Lancer underestimate Saibah?
>>
>>122471585
And thus this discussion has ended. The conclusion is that Saber wanted Lancer to block her attack that she as you said put most of her energy into. Making a logical move and hit him without him blocking is too much for Saber. Well, can't say anything much anymore. The scene was just a mix of bad decision by Nasu just to prolong the story.
