That's the joke. The joke is that she wants him to study hard, and she's an overprotective mother, despite being married to the strongest guy in the world, and her own son (secretly at the time) being stronger than him.

We can go in and out about how he doesn't need to read that much, or that he could train sometimes, but ultimately, it's just a big dumb joke.
Outside of the rare showcasing of intimacy between the two, Goku and Chichi's relationship is just one big joke.

There isn't any good reason why Goku doesn't go out, get a job in construction or something, and do the entire work of a whole team, machines included and take home the pay.

The reason is that it would be Goku with a job, and then the series isn't about punching aliens or monsters anymore.

There's no GOOD reason for Krillin to still live at Master Roshi's house, he can easily get a fucking job of his own, BUT because this is Dragonball Z, no one really cares and it really doesn't matter what his job is.

The only reason we care now because the series has gone on for so long, and we want all the little tidbits about the series we didn't think about before.

I mean, put this in perspective. At the start of DBZ, Goku takes Gohan to visit Master Roshi, Bulma and Krillin. He introduces Gohan to them. Everyone else is surprised.

So basically, Goku had a kid for 4 years, and none of them fucking knew about it, no one visited each other, spoke on the phone with one another, and hadn't seen or heard about each other since.

If you take it as it is, it's just them being surprised that this forest boy they had adventures with is a father now.
If you think about it a bit harder, then you realize that they had no contact since the last time they saw each other.

DBZ's world has it's own logic, and trying to put "real world" logic into it just makes it fall apart.

It doesn't matter how far Gohan lives because he can fly to the school you fucking idiot.
Chichi is the one who actually makes sense here. In the mountains his son can't get into fights with other kids and has nothing to do but study.
