So I have been playing Fate/Stay Night for a while and finished it today, and I absolutely loved it. I felt like talking about it so, let's start from the beginning:
Fate Route
I understand that this is an introduction to the Fate series but still, besides Gilgamesh killing Caster there's nothing I'd say was beyond "good". The story itself was good but nothing really more than it. It feels like a regular shounen where our MC with no ideia as to what the fuck is going on ends up winning because, you know, he's the MC. The route is pretty straight forward, even with it's backstory.
The characters were okay with Saber and Gilgamesh being in the spotlight, and Shirou's character being complete shit. That was the part I hated the most.
Fate Shirou is a pretty bad MC that doesn't even let his servant fight because "she's a girl and girls don't fight". Instead he tries to protect his servant to the point he dies a million times because of it. He does have Avalon, so it's k.
Fate was really straight forward, with not much to add to it. Felt like a typical shounen, although it was a good start because it explained things well, and you need this information to get to the good routes.

Yeah, it's generally agreed that Fate has problems, but it serves as a decent introduction.

Unlimited Blade Works
Oh my god this was good. Such a big step up from the Fate route. In one word, this route was amazing.
We get to know more of best guy Archer, and learn about his past, ideals and all that shit, and it was so epic. This route was full of moments that give me goosebumps and twists that had my jaw drop for a few minutes. Like when Archer said "Trace, on" in the church, while killing his own Master, Caster. The rest of the story is amazing, with pretty good twists and character development, and a more well written story than in Fate.

Even though the cast is the same the characters in this route are way better. Archer is one of my favorite characters of all time, Rin is a better best girl than Saber, who herself is present but ever since Caster took her there wasn't much attention on her character. We get to see more of Kirei which is good because he is interesting, and we also get to jump on the "FUCK SHINJI" train in this route. Lancer is a bro and the funniest servant there is, Gilgamesh shows what a fucking badass he can be, and Illya.. well she just dies.

Also, we can't forget about Shirou, who in Fate was complete shit but turned out to be kind of a badass in UBW.
The interactions between Archer and Shirou were very good and the way the story "connects" is amazing. Learning about Archer's past and why he is doing all of this was a wonderful ride.

He is a much better character in the other two routes. That Saber being a girl isn't forced down by Shirou at all in them, like he sees her fight and he's pretty much "Welp guess I'll let her do it" in the other two routes.

I just realized you said you finished it so you probably already know all but oh well, I also finished it a week or two ago and found a great thread for a bunch of the stuff I wanted to discuss after the end at that time.

I'm glad you managed to play that route without having the Archer twist spoiled for you.
Even though I did figure it out and then have it confirmed before starting UBW, everything about Archer's story and his interactions with Shirou is the best thing I've seen so far I'm only up to Day 6 of HF
Seeing the fight scene from Archer's point of view at the end made me tear up and Rin is best girl for sure.

This is the darkest route, and with the most twists aswell. But everything in this route was done beautifully, I don't even have words for it.

There is a lot of focus on Sakura and Rin, mainly Sakura, but more towards the end them being sisters turns into an important factor. Saber is pretty much non-existent, and Archer, while not being too present, made up for it by giving Shirou his left arm. Why? Because Shirou is probably the most badass character in this route. More than Gil who just dies instantly. I mean, if you say Shirou killing Berserker wasn't amazing you aren't human. Rider is in the spotlight even though most of the things she does is appear out of nowhere to protect Sakura at all costs. Talking about Sakura, her character goes through so much it's unreal. The shadow she created was a pretty important factor. Shirou, Kirei, Sakura, Rin, and even Illya all had pretty good and amazing moments this route. Also, FUCK SHINJI SO MUCH HOLY SHIT HIS CHARACTER IS SO WELL WRITTEN FOR MAKING ME HATE HIM SO MUCH, BUT FUCK HIM. That felt oddly satisfying to type.

Also that ending. Both the Normal and True ending are God-tier and even the Superhero bad ending is (imo) good. Bad thing is that we only get a prediction, not see what happened after Shirou decides not to stop Rin from killing Sakura. Well I assume he just dies because he didn't have Archer's arm at the time, but I like to think he actually acted like Kiritsugu and ended up winning.
