I never see the protag from Re:Monster mentioned in these threads, when he really should. Early on you think he's just average and down on his luck, and will have to get through his predicament using his wits. Then you learn that he has a super special unique superpower which sounds like the most broken thing in the universe. Then he uses it and it really is the most overpowered and broken thing in the universe. Then he keeps getting super-special unique/rare powerups nonstop, makes everyone around him worship him, and gets literal harems of girls bending to his dick.

It's the most blatant power fantasy I've seen in my life.

The only reason that he's seen as "weak" compared to others is that he needs to bend over backwards to do simple shit that he'd never actually need to do in the first place. Like, it's if you told him to draw a square, and while artists do it in 2 seconds, he takes 10. The fun part about Mahouka is that the ride never ends. When you think you unraveled the secret behind the MC's strength there always comes a next layer.
In the beginning I thought he had some kind of index like power. The next thing you know he's also part of the most feared clan of magicians in Japan. But then he is a genuis technician who runs a major company. If that is not enough he is suddenly the member of a secret special ops team. That's a already a nice mix but at the end of the day the author knew that this is not enough and made Tatsuya a strategic-level magician.
You see, a high-school student who's also a secret government agent would be a rather boring premise but the many things Tatsuya is makes it fun to read.

Alright, the guy going through and saying that tatsuya is being held back by the experiment by his mother is completely wrong.

Here's how this shit works:
In their universe, magic exists in three parts Destruction, transformation, and reassembly. All magic is derived from this basic concept of destructing something transforming it and reassembling it. Tatsuya, born into one of the strongest magic users in the country if not the world, could only "destroy" and "reassemble". This is why he is looked down as a failure of a mage, because while he can do these things RIDICULOUSLY WELL (destroying spells, destroying islands, healing himself from lethal wounds in milliseconds) he couldn't do any "real" magic. So his mother, who was born with the innate magic talent of being able to mess with peoples brain, desides to perform an experiment on him to grant him magic powers. He has the area of his brain that processes extreme emotions, like love and hate, transformed into an artificial magic calculating area, essentially a computer within his computer. This computer's sole function is to do the transformation aspect that was missing from his magic. It allows him to perform incredibly low level magic, but it does let him perform it. He amplifies his magic using his genius CAD skills.

Had his family not been embarassed by his existence and set him on the path of being his sister's bodyguard, he wouldn't be anywhere near as OP as he looks. He would probably be an even bigger name inventor, and would probably still be a strategic class mage, but while his exploits on the battlefield would be less, he could probably blow even bigger shit up and have weapons no one else could even come close to.

Not necessarily true. In one of the world of warcraft books, a shitty author added in an orc that was an extreme mary sue. He singlehandedly took down legions of demons by himself, at one point he held a strategic position for several hours against an army and when backup arrived they saw him standing among thousands of dead bodies.
