Cute is completely fine, but moe is overdone and generally fits a certain style of work. It's not always bad, but often indicative of things that some audiences don't want in their anime. If you want it that's fine, but people on both sides of the discussion pushing their preferred direction as 'right' or as 'real anime' just make life harder for everybody.

That is a very good question you pose. It's hard to define, often coming as more of a guy feeling essentially. What has to be kept in mind is that the English usage of the word is a little different from the actual nip definition, similar to how we don't use 'anime' or 'manga' like they do.

There's something special about a show which has no plot yet is still able to really pull emotions out of the audience. Plots are the easiest way to generate emotions from people: a villain to hate, heroes to root for and get sad over when they have troubles or die, cliffhangers to force you to tune in next week, etc. Plots are easy mode regarding creating emotional connections with the audience.

For example, in Kill lel Bill, you have "villain of the week" as your antagonist, some tits and ass here and there to keep your hormones raging and a revenge story straight out of Kill Bill. After the episode ends, it is back to the status quo with another villain from another club next week. Is this what the baka waito gaijins think is good anime with a good plot?

For most SoL shows to draw genuine laughs, tears, nostalgia, friendship and familial-bonding-type feelings without any plot is an achievement not to be fucking written off, IMO.

I watched it back in 2003 or whenever. Seems like there were more space shows back then. Ryvius, Stellvia. Though I know planetes has been getting hyped on /a/ recently, I put it in my "good but not as good as everyone seems to think" folder along with Eva and Meguca.
