So I finished watching Yuki Yuna was a decent show, but I couldn't get past the Madoka similarities.

The characters especially seemed like copies of the Madoka cast, right down to the color schemes. We've got Fuu/Mami, the more experienced girl who recruits the others as magical girls. Mimori looks strikingly similar to Homura, they both use guns, they're both protective of Yuna/Madoka, and Episode 10(Madoka) gives us an extended flashback of their past years of experience as magical girls. Karin wears red like Kyoko and is the brash outsider of the group who eventually warms up to the others and tries to protect them. I'll admit that Itsuki isn't anything like Sayaka, but losing her voice and being unable to sing reminded me a lot of Kyousuke losing his ability to play violin, which was a major part of Sayaka's story. It may be tangential, but it's something that struck me as I was watching.

During the slice-of-life episodes, I actually felt like I was watching a fanfic where someone wanted the Madoka cast to have a more normal life, hang out and be friends with each other. Which is what a lot of Madoka fans like to see in fanart.

The thing is, YuYuYu had a lot of interesting ideas about how its magical girl system worked. The plot itself was pretty interesting. I would have liked the show so much more if its cast of characters was a little bit more original. Madoka is already the most famous tragic magical girl show, so YuYuYu really needed to do as much as possible to distance itself from that.

I enjoyed my time with it, but I don't think it'll have the staying power of Madoka which is a shame since it's the best once since. Maybe they can do better in a sequel.

Either I'm responding to pasta or OP's a redditor, but I'll respond anyway since I'm glad to have another YuYuYu thread:

In terms of personality, the Yuushas are almost entirely different from the Megucas. Mami, for example, is very elegant and restrained, whereas Fuu is very brash and hot-blooded, and Fuu is very genuine whereas one of the biggest aspects of Mami's character was that her elegant sempai persona was a facade she put up to hide her crippling loneliness.

Homura, meanwhile, is very introverted and repressed, both as Moemura and as modern Homura. Meanwhile, Tougou, while reserved, is never really shown to be shy, and has no problems opening up to others. Also, their reasons and methods for ultimately rebelling against the system are different: Homura's plan was calculated and designed to protect one person while screwing over everyone else, including her. Tougou is straight-up panicking in the last few episodes and isn't thinking straight, and she wants to "save" all of her friends, not just Yuuna.

Kyouko wasn't a tsundere, she was just genuinely angry at the world and had a very nihilistic view of the world, Karin was just socially retarded from training so hard to be a Hero and eventually grew out of it.

Both were enjoyable, both did certain things better than the other.

If you are going to argue that Yuyuyu is in someway inferior due to the similarities between it and Madoka you might as well go the whole nine yards and compare Madoka with Ryuki or any of the numerous previous works which explored the very same themes.

Even with all the similarities there are a differences between the two.

-Madokas (as shorthand for the Magical girls in Madoka Magica) fight witches as remuneration for a wish, Heroes do it for the common good of their world.

-The setting of Madoka depicts magical girls from around the world and throughout history, which I feel somwhat undermines Madoka's whole decision in becoming a law of the cycle since one might figure someone else in the world or before madoka might have made a similar wish. Yuyuyu makes their heroes out to be the last bastion of humanity once it reveals that the world beyond the barrier is basically oblivion.

In all seriousness, one of the things I liked about YuYuYu is that it didn't just use tropes as characters but developed them past their initial archetypes. Itsuki goes from being dependent on her big sister to becoming someone who can stand beside her, Karin grows out of (most of) her Tsundereness, etc.

>>120763361
What's so bad about using certain tropes? Being original just for the sake of being original isn't necessarily good, and not forcing yourself to be unique isn't necessarily bad.

Nothing is wrong with the tropes, just that they have latched on to Madoka more predominately which makes every magical girls show become inferior to it by default as a general public consensus.

Tougou was right for the wrong reasons, Yuuna was wrong for the right reasons. If Tougou hadn't done what she did then the Yuushas would've ended up as logs eventually and the Shinju would probably have been destroyed eventually.

>>120763703
You're never going to find a story that has completely unique tropes; you're basically calling Madoka the absolute apex of storytelling.
>>
>>120763808
>unique tropes
That's a paradox in and of itself.

>Tougou was right for the wrong reasons
No, Tougou was mostly wrong and set off a chain of events that was mostly catastrophic and was saved only through copious personal sacrifice by her friends and truckloads of unforeseen asspull. She was mostly wrong. Fortunately for the world, she was also mostly a failure.
>>
>>120763808
Nope, I am using Madoka as a landmark for those tropes, not as the only and best one. My point was saying due to this, sadly every magical girls show gets compared to Madoka even though these tropes existed before Madoka but none cares about that since Madoka is the popular one.

And?
Homu is the most popular and most fleshed out character.

Stop watching everything with your madoka googles. The group dynamic in madoka doesnt hold a candle with the hero club. The cake song is laughable if that is their way of group bonding.
>>
>>120763932
>That's a paradox in and of itself
Exactly. You're never going to have a completely unique story and so you can't really fault one just for sharing a few tropes that are common to it's genre. It's not that YuYuYu used them, it's what they did with them that matters.

Tougou's reasoning was ultimately correct though, in that she and her friends were doomed and that the world was probably not long after. It took Yuuna and the Yuushabu's courage to convince Shinju that humans could stand on their own. Even though the new plan hinted at in Sonoko After may fail, the way that humanity was going about things before was guaranteed to fail eventually. Yuuna simply caused a miracle to happen.
>>
>>120764127
>Tougou's reasoning was ultimately correct though, in that she and her friends were doomed and that the world was probably not long after.
And then she went full-retard in accelerating that process. Her robbing the world of agency and deciding on its behalf that life is not worth living anymore is flat-out wrong.

We have had this discussion countless times. Let's stop. Instead, let's talk about how we want to overcome East Asia with Tougou. (in b4 surging waves)

That Tougou's actions, regardless of their morality, led to positive change.

Togo the BEST. Taisa a SHIT.

The soundtrack was amazing, too.
>>
It's always amusing to see all these newfags who have only watched Madoka argue about magical girl tropes. The only real problem with YYY was the pacing, a script that was all over the place and the sheer amount of themes that became wasted potential due to bad directing. It's just another one of those shows that tries to be different but can't manage it very well due to various reasons. Overall it's a fine piece and the Madoka comparisons are beyond retarded, they only show how uneducated /a/ is in the genre.
>>
>>120762598
>>
>>120764625
We're talking about rightness and wrongness, which implies morality. Tougou set off a chain of events but was definitely not the only actor that led to that positive change. Tougou is not nearly the only one responsible for that. Taken to absurdity, Tougou's mom led to positive change because her birthing Tougou eventually led to that positive outcome.

Tougou was morally wrong and CONTRIBUTED to a good outcome with much outside help.
>>
>>120763675
Togo's personality struck me as Homura from the early timelines. She sees herself as weak and vulnerable, and looks up to Madoka/Yuna to protect her. Togo had a physical disability that required a wheelchair, but Homura had some kind of heart condition - it's not explained what exactly it was, but it's still a disability, just a less outwardly visible one. Eventually she starts to feel guilty that she's relying so much on others, and resolves to become strong enough to protect Madoka/Yuna. Plus, we find out (in episode 10, for BOTH series) that Togo/Homura has a secret backstory and more experience as a magical girl than we initially realize.

I'm not sure what you see between Togo and Homura. Fuu is clearly a lot more like Mami, and once again it's not only based on visual design. She's the one who recruits the other magical girls, but isn't entirely aware of the consequences she's putting them into. Fuu had some more obvious chuunibyou-ish tendencies, which Mami kind of displayed - Mami was the only one who named her attacks like a stereotypical anime character. Also, both Fuu and Mami have mental breakdowns once they realize what they've condemned the others to. Fuu goes berserk once she realizes their disabilities won't heal, and Mami actually tries to kill everyone once she realizes magical girls become witches

The thing about Madoka is that it takes the group dynamic normally present in these kinds of stories and throws it on the ground. Mami dies because she didn't trust Homura, which in turn was due to Homura's cold treatment of her. Sayaka and Homura hate each other, Kyouko ultimately fails to connect to Sayaka until it's too late. The one time one character truly opens up to another- Mami to Madoka- it ends up indirectly getting her killed.

There is a big difference between "intent" and "outcome". Her intent is wholly her responsibility; she contributes only partly to the overall outcome.
The fact that she did it for the wrong reasons makes her mostly wrong.

Suppose someone tries to rob a bank, is unsuccessful in doing so, but did it in a way that causes security companies to redo bank safety procedures so as to decrease the chances of successful bank robberies in the future. Despite the positive outcome, the would-be robber is still wrong in his actions.

So I finished watching Yuki Yuna was a decent show, but I couldn't get past the Railgun similarities.

The characters especially seemed like copies of the Railgun cast. We've got Fuu/Saten, the more mature girl who's confident, self-assured and slutty. Mimori looks strikingly similar to Kuroko, they're both hard-core lesbians, they're both loyal and protective of their home nation, and they both get punched/zapped by their love interest. Karin is a tsundere like Mikoto and is the one who acts like they don't care but secretly is super in love with her love interest. While Yuuna and Touma are always super enthusiastic about fighting to save everyone. Also both shows contain suffering and SoL. Sonoko had figured out that the way the Taisha wanted to fight the Vertex, and were using the girls was a dead end.
What she told the Taisha was too frightening for them to deal with.
They blocked her access to the new Yusha, not only her access but anyone who had worked with the original three, so that the new heros had no trainers, no agent doubling as a homeroom teacher watching over them, which only made the psychological strain worse.
When Sonoko finally bypassed the Taisha and brought Togo-and inadvertently Yuna- to her, she was blocked by Togo's memory loss.
The memory loss kept Sonoko from just telling Togo what was happening and what she had to do.
Now she had to persuade a stranger to do what she wanted. But she knew Wasshi's base personality and so she used Wasshi's tendency for separation anxiety and depression to provoke her. An indirect route that had a much smaller chance of success, but it did in the end work.
If Togo had followed tenant 4 literally in this case, they would be dead, as Yuuna would almost certainly talked her out of doing anything.
Although another way of looking at it is that Togo did follow #4- she did talk to someone when troubled- she went to Sonoko. The assumption that it should be another team member you talk to is not in the text.

She's either talking to Vertex, or becoming a Vertex or drawing from Vertex power

Or all three at once
Anyway, she makes Sonocchi uncomfortable. And that's a big thing given how zen Sonoko usually is.
