Overarching plot isn't necessary. This type of show wouldn't really even allow a decent one.

But the individual story arcs so far have been as you said, mediocre and bordering on shit.
None have even attempted to grasp the human condition, something I think it should be striving towards as this type of show could do that with ease.
However, it staying with safe and boring stories so far.

And since the word shit in this context is a negative word derived from something physical, I think it should share the level of negativity that the physical thing has.
