Which is the best "dark" mahou shoujo series?
>>
>>120272833
Why is there only three?
>>
>>120272833
There are a whole bunch.

Nearly every one I can think of has its dark moments, in fact.
>>
>>120272833
Madoka is
>>
Didn't Minky Momo get hit by a truck in the last episode?
>>
Nanoha is pretty dark
>>
Sailor moon
>>
AOTY
>>
>>120274480
No, it happens about 20 episodes before the end.
>>
>>120272833
Post first the series you think fit into the 'dark' mahou shoujo genre. Then we can talk about best ones.

>>120274563
Not even AOTS material.
>>
>>120272833
Between those 3?
Madoka >>>>> Uta Kata >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Shit
>>
>>120272833
>only 3
Fucking pleb, those aren't even good or that dark.

Yes, they are. Provide your own then maybe we can talk. If not than please kindly, fuck off.
>>

>>120274921
Yuuki Yuuna isn't better than any of the top three and one them is pretty mediocre.
>>
Nanoha > YuYuYu > Madoka > Mai Hime > Uta Kata > Daybreak Illusion

Pic related is a masterpiece.
>>
>>120276085
The last great magical girl, unfortunately.
>>
>>120276085
Really? I never really thought of Princess Tutu as all that dark.

I'm surprised it took a few posts for Lyrical Girl Nanoha to get mentioned, it usually comes up sooner.

Worthwhile to try those two and see if you feel the difference, because there's a definite gap between the seinen and shoujo stuff.
>>
>>120275326
Not that guy, but if you wanted to list the top 3 dark mahou shoujo anime it should probably be Madoka, Uta~Kata, and Utena. My-HiME is also darker than Gen'ei. Although it's definitely top 10 for dark mahou shoujo (if only because there's only maybe 10 dark mahou shoujo).
>>
>>120277160
It took five posts and Nanoha is getting old.
I'm still watching StrikerS though.
>>
>>120272833
Madoka because Urobuchi
>>
>>120277251
Eh whoops. Only saw the later one. And I'm actually not a fan of it at all.
>>
>>120277425
I watch it for the talking weapons and laser beams.
>>
Sailor Moon. Best non-dark is Nanoha

Madoka, yucky tuna and genei a steaming shit. Sorry edgelords.
>>
>>120274563
Ignoring the last episode sure.

>HURR DURR SUFFERINGFAG

No, the finale had legitimately bad writing
>>
>>120272833
Utena.
/thread
>>
Gen'ei was pretty good after episode 8 when the MotW stopped.
>>
>>120278653
Gen'ei became slightly less shit at some point, but it sure never became good.
>>
>>120272833
I guess it depends on what you mean by dark.

Girls aren't always happy
Girls have incredibly sad moments and cry buckets
Girls go from one crushing event to another
Girls teeter on the edge of despair (or just die lots)
Girls would rather be dead but must continue living

A lot of wiggle room in those, too.
>>
Is Wixoss mahou shoujo relevant?

Yeah I guess.
>>
>>120278758
I agree.
>>
>>120278862
Not really.
>>
>>120277160
Just because it doesn't resort to cheap shock value tricks like Madoka or Gen'ei doesn't mean it's not dark.
>>
>>120279396
guess that depends on what you think a show needs to do to earn its darkness

Thing is I wouldn't really count Utena as a mahou shoujo. If so then it would be definitely be at the top. But just because it has something akin to a transformation sequence I don't see how it classifies.

>>
>>120276085
It is, but I wouldn't really say it's dark.

Madoka. UtaKata and that other one don't even qualify as good dark magical girl. UtaKata because it's such a terrible train wreck of a story, and that other one because it tries so hard to be the same thing as Madoka but utterly fails to understand what made Madoka good.
>>
Is it just me or do seinen magical girl series seem more juvenile than shoujo ones?
>>
>>120277160
Oh, Princess Tutu was pretty dark. Not as beat-you-over-the-head-with-it as Madoka, but it really was pretty dark.
>>
Madoka.
>>
Nanoha is kind of dark, but despite the despair, the tone is overwhelmingly positive, so I really don't think it qualifies.

Doremi had some dark stuff like cancer, abuse, alcoholism, and racism.
>>
>>120282071
I wouldn't say so, it had a dark atmosphere at times, but it was usually when the villain appeared. Which is rather expected. Many of the seemingly negative characters actually turn out to be positive at the end.
