Can anyone tell me what is the deal with this show? I dropped it after the first ep since I'm not into generic mahou shoujo shows. But apparently, at some point it gained quite a following on /a/ and now every day I see at least one Yuki Yuna thread with 3-digit replies.

Did later episodes have some sorts of suffering twists or what?

>generic mahou shoujo shows
This day and age the slot of genric mahou shoujo show is taken by whatewer season of Precure in running now and there is no chance another generic mahou shoujo show would successfully compete with it. That's why they don't make generic mahou shoujo shows anymore.
You were wrong about labeling YuYuYu as generic mahou shoujo show because it exists and generic mahou shoujo shows don't.

>>
>>119895148
>If for "failing in suffering" you mean that it does a much better job

The characters are more likable, but the portrayal is poor. The story doesn't have the balls to get dirty and personal enough, which leaves their despair lukewarm. The characters escape to their delusions to the very end, never truly accepting the reality in front of them, and what's worse, it saves them.
>>
>>119894707
There's nothing like Togo going crazy in Madoka. Your argument is invalid. Inb4 arguing about that stupid lesbo.
>>
>>119895421

Since yusha can't die, I think what you want to say is "Most of them never really give up their hope to live a normal happy life again"?
>>
>>119895774

There are two types of people criticizing the final episode though.
Those who get off on suffering and hate happy ends, they can fuck off.
And those who are okay with the happy end but don't like the execution. And the execution could have been better, in fact, they should have had either 13 episodes or cut a bit of the SoL in the first half of the show to give the finale more time.

YUUNA IS STILL A HERO FIGHTING ALONE

I almost dropped it on Episode 2 because I could feel the suffering coming and it felt like it was trying too hard to be Madoka. Then a couple of days later I marathoned it to Episode 9 (the newest episode at the time) and I fell in love.

It's all about the characters; YuYuYu has some of the best characters in a long time and that makes the more emotional parts hit incredibly hard. Also, despite some of the character designs looking similar the characters are nothing like Madoka's, if anything Yuuna is much, much closer to Hibiki than to Madoka.

>mahou shoujo
>very cute girls
>muh tweests and suffering
That's pretty much all there is to it. The setting is very plain and the characters themselves as well. The only one mildly intriguing is Tougo but it's more like she does out-of-the-box things for the sole purpose of allowing the viewer to experience the limitations of the world/system.

It's not all that great. The characters, relationships, and school life feel cheap. What's funny is that the school life takes up a very sizable portion of it that you are left to wonder in the beginning for the most part just where exactly the series is going. They spend so much time establishing a normal school life setting with very sparse and occasional other-dimension battles that the suffering and twists as a whole feel tacked on themselves.

It just seems like a mashup of whatever they thought would be successful, and to a certain extent, it executes those individual aspects fairly well. You can tell whoever is directing the voices is really telling them to let it all out to the point you hear their voices crack ever so slightly. The girls are fucking cute and have great interactions too. The battles are pretty cool and you can get fucking pumped watching Yuuna punch the shit out of things.

But it all feels borrowed and tacked on. Blind heroism leading to tragic betrayal by a system largely out of their control. Girls are teleported here and there to explain these drastic twists and learn what's really at stake. The jokes and expressions feel really out of place, not that it isn't intended for Fuu to make them feel as such, but they still manage sort of shake me out of the immersion I'd like to feel when watching it.

If you're interested at all by either CGDCT, out-of-place suffering, and/or plot twists, it's worth a watch. I really think it's overrated though, I really couldn't understand why so many people here liked it as much as they did.

>>
>>119896124
In retrospect, I think that the SoL segments were there to showcase what was at stake in the latter episodes, and those segments also work as being good SoL. Plus as you said, the girls have really good interactions and are really fucking cute, which makes you care more about the characters when shit starts going down.

I'll admit that Episode 8 can be a strange way to deliver drama, although it takes on a lot more meaning if you've read the prequel LN (not saying that that's the greatest story model, but it's there). This show probably is a bit overrated, but any show that gets general threads on /a/ becomes overrated.

I think that part of it is because Fall 2014 was a weak season overall, besides things like UBW (that lost steam after a while) and Cross Ange's trainwreck. The best way that I can describe this show is that it doesn't try to be big, whereas Madoka was banking on becoming huge and succeeded.

Plus as several anons have mentioned the voice work is 10/10, which is surprising given the large amount of rookie VAs. I really hope that Yuuna's and Karin's VAs get more roles after this, even if Yuuna's VA seems mildly autistic.

A lot of /a/'s love for this show simply stems from wanting to spite madokafags. Yuyuyu doesn't surpass it in any way, though, its characters and their relations are even more stupidly simple than madoka's.

It was mostly the pacing taking away from the main point of the show, to show the girls' daily lives and how they deal with the problems that arose. It was much too jarring. Timing just wasn't very good at all on a micro and macro scale. The pacing fucked up too many things to just simply say "Oh it was too rushed", or maybe I was just too attached to this show.

Where did the miniature sun just suddenly come from? I know it was the mini-vertex but that was pretty Diabolus Ex Machina.

The girls are recovering but it really doesn't make sense that they're doing so at the same rate given different degrees of sacrifice.

I know the cultural festival was unavoidable but the way they just had to jam that in there wasn't right.

The part where Tougou read the script to Yuuna was supposed to be emotional but instead felt quite awkward.

KANJOU was a lame explanation even though I think it's only the characters' interpretation.

Yuuna's dizziness at the end of the play felt really forced.

Again these can all basically be chalked up to terrible pacing. I'm just so strongly opinionated about it because I loved this show. The last episode just didn't have the same writing as the rest of the episodes.

Its a 7/10 magical girl show, average, but does it job. Has potential for some big shit with the whole Taisha/Family thing.

It's a nice breath of fresh air in the mess that Madoka's absurd popularity created, its good to see not-technological magical girls and its good to see a show not losing itself into forcing some stupid chuuni philosophy into its drama.

Could have been better if they handled episode 6-8 better
>>
>>119896777

I didn't watch this when it aired because the images reminded me too much of Madoka, and it felt like a rip-off, but after actually watching the show, I don't see much point comparing them.

Yes, the parallels and influences are obvious, but YYY never tries to directly challenge Madoka in any way and is so non-confrontantional about its approach it comes off as shy. That works as a weakness at times, but it's also what make you feel that it's okay to love it.

>main point of the show, to show the girls' daily lives and how they deal with the problems that arose.

I never thought this was the main point of the show, for me the main point was that every hero needs friends, which was a theme in each girls individual course of action, which was the main point of Fuu's and Tougou's conflicts and the main point of the finale, Yuuna's vegetative state and the stage play. The disabilities were just a part of the whole thing helping to make that point.

>Where did the miniature sun just suddenly come from? I know it was the mini-vertex but that was pretty Diabolus Ex Machina.

Mini-vertex? Leo is the hugest vertex of them all, and it collected all the remaining stardust, and while Yuuna and Tougou were busy it just upgraded itself into a huge fireball. It had already produced a huge fireball in ep.5, so nothing really weird here.

>cultural festival
See the first part, important message, heroes need friends.

>KANJOU was a lame explanation
It's KONJOU and it's a common trope in anime like these. It's used in Symphogear, Nanoha, Gunbuster and others. You either like it because "fuck yeah" or you don't because it's not rational.

>those segments also work as being good SoL
That's the thing that I was talking about. This show does a lot of individual aspects very well, but (and I suppose I failed to plainly state it) it all felt awkward to me when put together in the way they put it together.

This show could have very well been an SoL and succeed (in my eyes, I'm well aware of its moderate popularity). It could have very well been a mahou shoujo with suffering and succeed.

What it instead decided to do was blend the two with awkward pacing. The beginning portion treats you to a few very nice introductory battle sequences then drops it completely and spends a pretty hefty amount of time focused entirely on SoL. The light-hearted jokes and fun times they share confuse me, especially when they go on for so long. The foreshadowing is also inconsistent.

Honestly, I think the girls really sold the show, but otherwise the plot was hard for me to take seriously or otherwise immerse myself in. I can easily get pumped for the characters when they fight, but it was hard to sympathize or empathize with them when they kept cracking jokes and quips, were awfully accepting (at the start) of their really unfair circumstances that befell them, and when they all interacted with the very glaring bandages and other dressings on their injuries.

And Tougou trying shit like suicide JUST to test the system? It looked to me like she did it entirely on a whim. I'm not trying to ignore how they showed her struggle to actually do it, but I couldn't believe what little evidence she had gave her the confidence to make the decision in the first place. That wall thing seemed so weird to me too, usually if you have a metropolis setting whose outside is veiled by a thin wall of illusion, you introduce the wall early or put some feeling of importance on it. It just felt like it was thrown into existence for that scene alone.
>>

>It's like half of /a/ has never watched any other mahou shoujo before.

>>
>>119896847
I never implied that first memetext.
I din't pay a lot of attention to the threads, but when madoka was brought up, anons would shit on it very defensively.

Also what's your problem with guts and willpower?
Traditional magical girl shows had love as the all-solving principle, that newer blend of magical girl shows, presumably aimed at males, has willpower instead. What's so bad about willpower as the all-solving principle? It's more interesting and less cheesy than love for sure.

In the LN, you get all that shit about the girls living in a shady theocratic dictature thrown into your face right in the beginning, but the anime tried to pretend that everything is normal for as long as possible. It only gave small hints here and there, but you can easily miss those if you aren't paying full attention.

Not like the Precure brand of love is any different from willpower though.
The love they speak of in the end is just the motivation to get their willpower going on.
>>
>>119897478

Do you even know what parody is?

>Also what's your problem with guts and willpower?

It's a convenient asspull you can use when the characters are written into a corner, to solve everything without actually explaining shit. It's lame, boring, cheap and stupid. It's good for light-hearted comedy, but unforgivable in a serious work.

Of course, Shinju isolates the area (hello, hellfire out there).
What I'm try to say that even if the virus does not exist (now), the mean of protection in the past still pertains (which acts as propaganda and organised by Taisha under the will of Shinju). So a wall exist right after the creation of illusion barrier is not farfetch at all.
>full-on cocoon
I think it bends to outline the shape of the tree.

I can see what you mean. I always felt that even in the last few episodes, this series was much more about character drama than about being an actual mahou shoujo. For example, for me Karin's awesome fight in Episode 11 was great not because it looked cool (although it did), but because it was about how Karin had gone from being generic tsundere #3573830 to truly caring about her friends and went above and beyond fighting for them even though she knew the consequences. I personally loved that blend, but I can see why it might look awkward for somebody else who wanted them to go farther in one direction.

For me, the SoL is to illlustrate how these are just normal, everyday girls who are caught up in horrible shit and try to make the best of it. Sure, they fight for the fate of their world but at the end of the day they just want to go to school and hang out and be ambiguously gay for each other. It's when the revelations of Episode 8 reveal that this won't be possible anymore that things start to go to hell. The jokes stopped in Episode 8 except for in flashbacks because that's when the mood of the show changed. Madoka did the same thing with it's two fakeout episodes in the beginning.

You're right that Tougou trying to take a slice of her life came a bit out of left field, but it was already establised that she's always super-thorough with everything, and is also a pessimist who gives up easily. Plus her own research had been consistent with what Sonoko told her, so she had no reason to disbelieve her (plus 14-year-old girls tend to be gullible).

Also, I didn't see anything wrong with the foreshadowing. In fact, I think it's well done (the opening, Fu's joke about taking back offerings, etc.) It's also nice how they use tarot meanings more accurately than some other shows.

It also has the underdog factor going for it, which I think made a lot of people root for it after it got heavy.

>>119897546
>Do you even know what parody is?
Do you? Because you sure don't seem to know.

Sure, MUH WILLPOWAH is usually used as an asspull. But that doesn't mean it's parody. It's a very commonly used thing in shounenshit.
>>
>>119897525
The LN truly abused infodumping a bit too much. I'm glad I didn't read a single chapter until episode 10.
>>
>>119897591

Yes, I actually use the term to mean what it really means, instead of what you think it means. If you can't see Symphogear as parody, then there's no hope for you. Protip: it's not just because of the excessive and liberal use of willpower in the storyline.

Alright, then, what is Symphogear parodying?
>>
>>119897440
>Thinking about it now, Why was it a wal of certain height instead of a full-on cocoon? Vertex can float afterall.
Well, if there was no wall there, all the water would flow into the outside and become fire, wouldn't it? The Vertex seem to be kept outside by some kind of invisible spherical barrier that has no relation to the physical wall we can see in the show - at least in looks like it in pic related.
>>
>>119897542
Didn't watch Precure yet, but sure, there's probably a continuum with love and willpower as its two extremes, and most shows are somewhere in between.

>>119897546
>Nomen
>An imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.
>comic
Like I said, Symphogear has too many serious and dark tones that I would consider it a parody.

>It's a convenient asspull
It's a superhero show, what did you expect? Heroes are expected to create miracles out of love and willpower, that has nothing to do with bad writing, that's what distinguishes the true hero from everyone else.
How do you even enjoy shows like these without enjoying the fuck out of the hero preavailing and kicking ass by her very own power?
Yuu³ is a character-driven show and never ceased to be one, even if it it pretended to be story-driven for a while. Sadly that fooled quite a few people who aren't into character-driven shows and they got disappointed in the end because after all, the character are more important than the story.

>A parody (pronounced /ˈpærədiː/; also called send-up or spoof), in contemporary usage, is a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation.

1. Parody does not need to be limited to a single specific work. Tropes common to multiple works and genres can be parodied.
2. Being parody does not mean a work must exclusively have only scenes that parody another work.
3. A work can have an original plotline, but still use it as a base to parody various other works. Amazing, isn't it?

I hope this helps.
>>
>>119897910
You still didn't answer my question. What is Symphogear parodying?
>>
>>119897910
>a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun
That right there specifies the work's central purpose.
>>
>>119897910
>2. Being parody does not mean a work must exclusively have only scenes that parody another work.

Correct, but the overall feeling while watching the show is not that of a parodistic humorous work. Symphogear is not a comedy show, it's a sf magical girl show with parodistic elements, but while it doesn't take itself serious with its parodistic elements, it does take itself serious with the story itself, the characters' bad, even horrible background stories, etc.
But Symphogear is really hard to categorize here anyway, it mixes serious emotional stuff with ridiculously overdone parodistic stuff so fast you don't really know what's going on.

Tougou is not a bear, she's a gentle lily with a delicious smell. Yuuna's love is much more primitive, not in the carnal sense, but in the sense that it's innocent.

It's a good show. Madoka is still better but it does some stuff really well that Madoka never focused on, particularly the SOL segments and the whole team dynamic, whereas Madoka was written to individualize and sometimes isolate its characters. Just that in this case, their injuries and lost of limbs are not permanent. Seems the anime industry is stoking the nationalist theme pretty hard nowadays. It certainly feels like there is a rise in these kind of anime.
